Description
This is supervisory level work performed in the completion of complex maintenance tasks in the municipal water distribution system and its components.
Work involves responsibility for organizing and leading the work of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance personnel, laborers, and equipment operators assisting in water distribution system maintenance and repair work . Assignments also include the performance of related skilled tasks . The assigned work is performed independently under the direction of the Superintendent of Water Distribution and is reviewed through discussions on specific problems, incidental inspections of completed work, work reports prepared, and the achievement of desired results.

Organizes and assigns water system maintenance and repair work; inspects jobs under way and upon completion; advises on work problems.
Operates a side tapping machine in the installation and repair of water lines; operates a backhoe in digging ditches to perform maintenance and repair work.
Makes general and difficult system repairs; repairs water leaks and mains; locates meters and valves; lines up and levels line and meter installations; repairs fire hydrants.
Operates a variety of maintenance and related equipment including water pumps, portable generators, air compressors, and winch lines in performing system repairs and maintenance work. Ability to operator the Vactor Truck.
Responsible for crew safety ensuring that proper on-the-job safety procedures are followed, and safety equipment is consistently and properly used .
Prepares standard job reports; provides management with specific date for daily log reports; lists materials used, work performed, and man hours devoted to respective jobs.
Performs related work as required .

- Computer software system(s) including but not limited to the email, work order system, internet searches, and GIS.

- Skill in the use, care, and demonstration of general and specialized tools, and the mechanical and automotive equipment used in required maintenance work.

- E quivalent combination of training and experience.
C ertificat e or Licen s es:
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License with airbrake endorsement. Employees or applicants hired into the position after October 23, 2024, must have a tanker endorsement.
- Illinois EPA Public Water Supply Class D Operators License in the probationary period for new employees in the bargaining unit or the qualification period for current Lodge 1000 employees.
- Majority of work is performed in an outdoor setting in all conditions including hot, cold, wet and dry weather . Work requires traveling to in-town construction sites and the ability to traverse a variety of natural and altered ground surfaces which may be uneven, wet or slippery or sloped.
