The City of Bloomington seeks an Assistant or an Associate Corporation Counsel to join the in-house legal team in the City’s Legal Department. Under the direction of Corporation Counsel, this position will be responsible for providing legal counsel and representation to the City, its departments, officials, and staff in a wide range of legal matters, including labor and employment law, collective bargaining, municipal law, litigation, code enforcement, and public policy.


The applicant should have a strong understanding of both civil and administrative law and be able to handle complex legal issues while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Experience handling matters before the EEOC, IDHR, IDES, and/or other administrative bodies is preferred, but is not required. 


The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of five years of experience in collective bargaining and/or employment matters, including experience in handling grievance procedures, ensuring compliance, conducting employment investigations, and ensuring alignment with organizational policies and labor regulations.


The successful candidate must be able to work independently, demonstrating sound judgment, collaboration, and strong multitasking abilities. They should be a proactive, positive, and contributing member of a dynamic, collaborative team and possess excellent communication skills. Furthermore, they should be open to developing new areas of specialization as legal needs evolve.
