Position Summary
Under close supervision and guidance, an individual in this position is expected to become a qualified Firefighter/EMT to provide basic and advanced life support care, perform fire suppression, fire prevention and inspection duties to protect life and property, to protect the community from disaster situations and promote an environment of public safety within the City of Blackfoot’s emergency response area. Due to the emergency nature of this work, the working hours of this position vary and will include weekends and evenings. This work is performed under the direct supervision of a Lieutenant or Captain and the indirect supervision of the Fire Chief; the employee may be assigned other duties as required.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire alarms, participate and assist in emergency and non-emergency operations as may be required, relating to fire and emergency medical situations that may involve, hazardous materials, confined spaces rescue, extrication and technical rescues including high angle, below grade, swift water, trench and collapse rescues; and other related services;
  • Provide emergency medical treatment to injured persons, involving the application of modern EMS techniques, advanced first aid at medical emergencies, and other related situations;
  • Acquire and retain a thorough knowledge of the response area, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items;
  • Operate all types of firefighting vehicles and rescue equipment, emergency medical response, rescue and extrication, such as portable fire extinguishers, power tools, hand tools, forcible entry tools and related equipment;
  • Clean and inspect equipment and apparatus as required, to ensure proper operation, and reports any needed maintenance to a superior officer;
  • Keep fire station, equipment, and grounds in a clean and orderly condition;
  • Participate in training activities and instruction sessions;
  • Perform various public safety education programs, fire prevention demonstrations and related events;
  • Enter inspection and training calls into the records management system(s);
  • Perform all work duties and activities in compliance with, and maintain current knowledge of, Departmental, City, County, State, Federal and other applicable policies, procedures, standards and safety practices;
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned;

Special Knowledge

  • Must maintain knowledge of current firefighting tactics and strategies for all types of fire such as wild-land, commercial, residential, airport, flammable and combustible liquids, vehicle, etc.;
  • Must maintain knowledge and skill with firefighting vehicles and emergency response vehicles and related equipment;
  • Must maintain knowledge of Uniform Fire Code for inspection purposes;
  • Must obtain and maintain a Firefighter 1 Certification within one year of hire date;
  • Must pass all pre and post-employment written and physical examinations and standards;
  • Must possess basic mathematical and science principles related to the core functions of the position

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalency; and
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Idaho Driver’s License
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to following orders, rapidly comprehend both oral and written instructions and apply available knowledge and guidelines to varied operational requirements;
  • Demonstrated speed to competency when learning and utilizing emerging technology, electronic and manual equipment;
  • Demonstrate a high level of technical competency utilizing emergency response records systems, communications equipment, computer fire applications, and incident reporting procedures;
  • Possess a positive attitude and an innovative, creative, flexible and versatile approach to work; demonstrated high level of integrity;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of duties, with accuracy and speed, under a high level of stress and the pressure of time sensitive deadlines;
  • Demonstrated good judgment skills when responding to emergency situations;
  • Demonstrated ability to perform and maintain a calm, professional demeanor when involved in emergency situations where there is a recognition of the threat to life and property;
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of co-workers as well as the public, under extremely stressful situations;
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Essential Physical Abilities

  • Sufficient clarity of speech, hearing, manual dexterity and personal mobility, strength and stamina, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to:
  • Discern verbal instructions, communicate with other employees and the public
  • Discern emergency alarms
  • Communicate via two-way radio, during emergency situations, that may or may not involve a high noise level
  • Operate equipment used in fire-fighting and emergency medical situations perform all duties in a firefighting, emergency medical response, and emergency response environment
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to effectively:
  • Operate at a fire or related emergency scene
  • Use close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus in both full light and low light situations
