DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves leading and participating in the
maintenance of the City's water and sewer system. An employee in this class is responsible for overseeing the work of small groups of workers to ensure that the work is carried out properly and diligently. The position is distinguished from the Water and Sewer Systems Supervisor by the limited nature of supervision exercised and from the Water and Sewer Maintainer by the increased scope of supervisory responsibility. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Water and Sewer Supervisor. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Leads and participates in the layout, marking and maintaining of the City's
water and sewer system; Leads and participates in routine water and sewer maintenance activities; Assists the Water and Sewer Maintenance Supervisor in planning daily work activities; Inspects grounds and equipment to ensure that they are in safe condition; Instructs subordinates in safe and efficient methods of performing water and sewer maintenance tasks; Reviews work performed by subordinates by on-site inspection; Leads and operates a variety of equipment and power tools in the repair and maintenance of the sewer system including water pumps, compressors, television cameras, blacktopping and cement making machinery, vac hauls, bucket machines and backhoes; May operate a variety of motor vehicle equipment; Answers complaints on water and sewer system operations; Locates breaks and investigates for reasons for water and sewer system failures; Leads and participates in the laying of storm and sanitary sewer lines; Leads in the rebuilding and repairing of catch
basins, sewer mains, laterals and head stones; Makes minor repairs on small pumps and occasionally welds.

CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, terminology and safety precautions
used in the maintenance and repair of the water and sewer system; ability to work from rough sketches and blueprints; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to direct the work of others; skill in the operation of motor equipment and power tools; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Five years of experience in water and sewer maintenance activities.
Special Requirements
Possession of a CDL-B New York State driver's license at time of appointment is required and maintain
the license during the entire length of appointment.
Possession of a Grade D Water Distribution License within 6 Months of appointment and maintain the
license throughout the entire length of appointment.
