Sanitary Sewer System Assistant Supervision - General employment applications may be obtained at the Personnel/Civil Service Office on the 4th floor, City Hall, Governmental Plaza, Binghamton, New York, 13901, or from the City Website at cityofbinghamton-ny.gov. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a supervisory position involved with the repair and maintenance of the sanitary sewer system. The incumbent assists the Sanitary Sewer System Supervisor in directing the overall operations of the sanitary sewer system. The work is performed under
general direction and in accordance with prescribed procedures with leeway in assigning work to
subordinates. The incumbent supervises a number of technical and unskilled employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Assists in assigning work to work crews in the maintenance and repair
of sanitary sewers including pumping station operations; May work with engineers and survey crews in
determining work needs in the repair, maintenance and replacement of existing sewer lines; Assists in
assigning and checking on work involving the cleaning of catch basins, cleaning of sewer lines and the maintenance and operation of pumps and pumping stations; Responds to complaints and assigns work crews to clean up outstanding problems; May supervise the work on major construction or sewer replacement projects. This position is considered a working supervisory position and as such the incumbent will be required to fill in where needed to complete job assignments. A CDL license is required for operating most of the Sewer Department vehicles.

CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment, terminology and safety precautions in the maintenance of sewer lines; thorough knowledge in the maintenance, repair and operation of a sanitary sewer and pumping station system; ability to plan and direct the work of others; ability to receive and follow complex written and oral directions in the repair, maintenance and operation of a sewer system; ability to keep records and to prepare reports; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
experience in work described in (a) above; or

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
- Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer systems including pumping stations of which one year shall have been on a supervisory level; or
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State recognized two year college with an
experience in work described in (a) above; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b) above.
