Distinguishing Features Of The Class
The work involves assisting in the performance of semi skilled and skilled tasks related to the repair, maintenance and construction of wastewater treatment plant equipment, vehicles, facilities, and grounds. The work is performed in accordance with the practices involved in the preventive maintenance, repair and fabrication of wastewater treatment plant equipment including pumps, manual and electronic valves, digester units, gas and diesel engine, compressors, injection systems and motors.
Typical Work Activities
Assists in a wide variety of job repairs and preventive maintenance to pumps, valves, mechanical screens, degritting equipment, sludge and grit conveyors, gear drives, manual and electronic valves, digester units, chemical injection systems, blowers, compressors, gas and diesel engines, plumbing and piping and HVAC; Assists in the Design and fabrication of equipment modifications to increase performance and / or decrease equipment failure; designs and fabricates supports, pump bases, railings, grating covers, weirs, guards, some concrete repair and construction.
Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Personal Characteristics
Some Knowledge of practices, tools, terminology and safety procedures established for the maintenance and repair of a Wastewater Treatment Plant; some knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of large pumps and auxiliary equipment; Knowledge of plumbing, preventive maintenance programs, gas and diesel engine repair, Some knowledge of the functions and practices used in the maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant, occupational hazards and standard safety practices including handling of toxic chemicals and biohazards; skill in the use of tools and equipment used for mechanical repair and fabrication; skill in repair of mechanical equipment; ability to work from plans, specifications, and rough sketches; ability to follow oral and written instructions; good
eye/hand coordination; mechanical aptitude; manual dexterity; knowledge of proper English, reading, spelling and grammar, methods and techniques for record keeping, basic principles of mathematics, willingness to work out of doors under adverse weather conditions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position;
Ability to work as a team member; Ability to work with computer interfaces and programs; must be physically capable of sustained climbing, walking, and lifting; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; Must be willing to work any day or shift.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from High School or possession of a High School equivalency
diploma and;
One year of experience as Waste Water Treatment Plant Maintainer or Operator Trainee; or
One year hands on experience with industrial mechanical maintenance, including but not limited to industrial pumps, engines, motors, conveyance equipment or plumbing.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an appropriate level motor vehicle operator license issued by the
New York State Department of Motor Vehicles with the ability to be covered under plant insurance policy at time of appointment, and maintain the license during the entire length of appointment.
