Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker - PRPL Parks

The City of Billings is seeking an Equipment Operator/Maintenance Worker to perform a full range of maintenance duties for Parks, Recreation and Public Lands (PRPL) at Mountview Cemetery, city buildings, equipment or grounds and/or operating a variety of equipment.

Salary Range: $23.4393 - $25.8510 per hour. Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 3 of a 7-step pay scale. The salary will be dependent on the applicant's education, experience, and training.

Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Checks tires, oil lubricant, water levels, lights and fuel.
  • Washes, lubricates and adjusts equipment.
  • Changes tires.
  • Maintains shop and storage areas used in performing assigned tasks.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area and tools.
  • Bend down and pick up loose artificial flowers and trash blown or carried into the Cemetery.
  • Empty trash cans throughout the Cemetery as needed.
  • Locate grave plots, mark them for excavation, use a backhoe to excavate the grave and manually square up the grave site.
  • Use of sod cutter to cut sod of new grave and to cut sod to repair a winter grave.
  • Move and stack sod by hand and replace the sod when completing a grave.
  • Dig by hand two feet by two feet by three feet hole cremation sites.
  • Carry and use a 75-pound jackhammer, when the ground is frozen, to excavate a cremation site and to cut the outline of full grave sites.
  • Set up and take down all lowering device equipment and a tent.
  • Meet the funeral procession at the front gate, stop traffic and lead the procession to the gravesite.
  • Assist in carrying the casket to the gravesite and help move the concrete vault into position.
  • In all weather conditions, hand shovel dirt and gravel to fill AVTs' for backfilling gravesites.
  • Use a jumping jack tamper and hand tamper to pack soil for both traditional and cremation gravesites.
  • Operate and maintain 2 and 3-stage snow blowers, operate a one-ton snowplow and shovel snow by hand.
  • Operate and maintain all commercial mowers, push and riding lawnmowers.
  • Operate and maintain string trimmers, blowers, sweepers, sprayers and other lawn care equipment.
  • Manually handle irrigation heads.
  • Thread metal pipe for irrigation system repairs.
  • Operate and maintain sprayers and apply hazardous chemicals to control weeds and fertilize cemetery grounds.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including tractor, front-end loader, various mowing equipment up to 16' area mowers, backhoe, trencher, blower, broom, snowplow, compaction equipment, dump truck, woodchipper, trash truck, bobcat, rock picker, and similar equipment while performing various assignments.
  • Constructs, maintains, and operates park structures and facilities including electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical components and notify proper personnel for repairs.
  • Maintain and repair bathrooms including but not limited to fixture flushometers, occupancy sensors, sweating copper pipe, fixture replacement, and wastewater drain clearing.
  • Maintains playgrounds, play equipment, and fall protection.
  • Performs inspections to identify safety hazards within playgrounds and make the necessary repairs to bring components into compliance.
  • Applies controlled herbicides in parks through handheld sprayers, tank pump sprayers, and broadcast sprayers to treat turf grass (parks, baseball fields, and soccer fields), planting beds, parking lots, sidewalks, and fence lines.
  • Maintains, installs, and repairs complex irrigation systems, pump stations, irrigation pumps and irrigation wells in City Parks.
  • Activates and deactivates water systems.
  • Orders and purchases pipe, fittings, and repair parts.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs irrigation electrical problems including time clocks, transformers, and valve wires.
  • Applies fertilizers in parks with walk behind spreaders, tractor towed spreaders, and handheld liquid applications to tur grass in parks, baseball fields, soccer fields, and planting beds with trees, shrubs, perennial and annual flowers.
  • Exercises sports turf management on soccer, baseball, lacrosse, rugby, and football fields.
  • Performs landscape maintenance tasks of pruning trees and shrubs, hedge trimming, perennial flower rejuvenation, sod repair, mulching, tree and shrub planting, and edging.
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs spray grounds.
  • Adjusts water features as needed to keep spray grounds operating within specifications.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications And Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' work experience with irrigation/landscape installation service, and maintenance.
  • Possession of a valid Montana driver's license or one must be obtained within thirty (30) days of employment.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Requires moving objects weighing up to 60 pounds on an intermittent basis.
  • Experience with central control irrigation systems such as Rainbird's IQ program is preferred.
  • Experience operating tractor towed core aerators, soil slicers, top dressers, drags, and edger's is preferred.
