Position Overview

Salary Range: $66,114.88 - $88,599.26/annually. Salary reflects Step 1 and Step 7 of a 7-step pay scale. Salary at hiring will be dependent upon the applicant's education, experience, and training.

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Job Summary:
Under general direction, provides statutorily mandated services to victims and witnesses of crime working primarily with domestic violence victims, whose cases pass through the Billings City Attorney’s Office.

Scope of Responsibility:
Incumbent has a high degree of understanding of crime victims’ laws, department and functional operations and is able to work with considerable initiative. Working with senior management guidance, incumbent sets precedent within limits that can affect the work unit. Incumbent performs advanced troubleshooting and analyses, using judgment to select from known alternatives. Incumbent must have the ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential matters.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provides assistance to victims, witnesses, and the general public
  • Responds to requests for information in a timely fashion.
  • Determines what information is appropriate for release.
  • Follows all applicable laws and regulations when providing information.
  • Provides the public with information on available resources.
  • Assists victims and witnesses by providing crisis counseling and in obtaining orders of protection.
  • Conducts lethality assessments.
  • Accompanies victims to court proceedings as requested.

Maintains records and files on all assigned cases
  • Ensures all relevant documentation is included in each file.
  • Maintains orderly files so that other staff can easily access them, as needed.
  • Maintains contact statistics.
  • Documents contact with victims for grant purposes.

Serves as liaison for victims and witnesses and the criminal justice system
  • Provides information to the appropriate parties regarding the case.
  • Schedules interviews with victims and witnesses.
  • Conducts research and locates witnesses as appropriate.
  • Provides appropriate support for victims and witnesses including community resources.
  • Attends arraignments and other court proceedings as necessary and provides information to Municipal Court as requested by the Court or City Attorney.
  • Assists with grant writing and reporting as assigned.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications and Skills:
  • Four-year degree in criminal justice, human services, sociology, social work, psychology, or a related program
  • One (1) year of related experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to pass a Federal and State criminal background check

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work is a normal office environment. Intermittent effort involving lifting of amounts between 5 and 25 pounds is required. Work requires high attention to detail or deadlines. Incumbent may be exposed to disagreeable elements on an intermittent basis including, dealing with angry people, threats of injury or assault, violence, or offensive language. Driving is required occasionally.
