This position is responsible for operating a variety of heavy construction and street maintenance equipment. 
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of a Class B CDL license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a state-certified Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License.

Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Factors such as regular attendance at the job not routinely listed in job descriptions but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following; 

  • Operates one or more of the following pieces of heavy equipment:  motor grader, bulldozer, trencher, dump truck, backhoe, front-end loader, excavator, roller, tractor, mower, and other light weight and heavy duty equipment necessary for the accomplishment of various department projects.
  • Inspects equipment prior to use to ensure that it is in proper operating condition.
  • Services and makes minor repairs to equipment; operates two-way radio.
  • Performs equipment maintenance duties such as lubricating, greasing, and checking belts, hoses, air, oil, gas, and other fluids.
  • Loads dump truck and hauls rock, dirt, mulch, asphalt, and other materials to or from work sites.
  • Fills and repairs roads, road shoulders; performs ditch and drainage construction, repair and cleaning.
  • Performs manual labor tasks such as flagging traffic, mowing/weedeating rights-of-way, cleaning and maintaining streets and ditches, and pouring, spreading, and leveling asphalt, concrete, and gravel.
  • Assists with the installation of street signs.
  • Applies pesticide and herbicide.
  • May be on call after hours to respond to emergency situations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of how to operate and perform minor maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of city, department and safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of city geography, including streets and rights-of-way.
  • Skill in defensive driving techniques.
  • Skill in operating various pieces of heavy and light equipment.
  • Skill in using various hand and power tools.
  • Skill in performing road construction and maintenance duties.
  • Skill in pesticide and herbicide application.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS 
The Street Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions.  The supervisor reviews work in progress and upon completion for compliance with established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
 
GUIDELINES  
Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, safety guidelines, traffic laws, and supervisory instructions.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific but require some interpretation in application.
 
COMPLEXITY  
The work consists of related duties in heavy equipment operation.  Inclement weather, equipment failure, and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.
 
SCOPE AND EFFECT
The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment used in street repair and maintenance. Successful performance helps ensure streets, drainage ditches, and rights-of-way are safe and properly maintained.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, city employees, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS
Contacts are typically to exchange information and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is typically performed while sitting in a vehicle for extended periods of time, with intermittent standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.  The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must be able to distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed outdoors.  The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather.  The work may require the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
