About the Position
The City of Bethlehem is seeking a Utility Maintenance Worker to join the Water & Sewer Resources – Utility Maintenance Bureau. This position performs semi-skilled manual work involving the construction, maintenance, and operation of water and sewer lines, pump stations, reservoirs, and related facilities.
The ideal candidate will have experience in water and sewer utility maintenance, a strong work ethic, and the ability to safely operate a variety of vehicles, tools, and maintenance equipment.
What You'll Do
- Construct, maintain, and operate water and sewer lines and related facilities.
- Perform maintenance at reservoirs, pump stations, manholes, culverts, and other water and sewer infrastructure.
- Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, including trucks, sewer rodding machines, flushers, and other maintenance and construction equipment.
- Repair and maintain mechanical and pumping equipment.
- Perform pavement, concrete, brick, and other infrastructure repairs.
- Collect and analyze water samples in the field using a handheld chlorine analyzer.
- Operate leak detection equipment.
- Use a laptop or desktop computer for work-related tasks.
- Work safely in underground structures and other challenging work environments.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Considerable experience in water and sewer utility maintenance.
- Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement.
Additional Requirements
- Class A CDL preferred.
- Class B CDL with tanker endorsement required.
- Must obtain a Class A CDL with an O endorsement (dump truck with tag trailer) within two years of hire.
- Must obtain a Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA-DEP) Class E Water Distribution System Operations Certification and/or Class E, 4 Wastewater Collection Systems Operations Certification within two years of hire.
- Valid driver's license.
- Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test.
- Must be available to work overtime and/or on-call assignments as needed.
Physical & Work Environment
This position requires the ability to:
- Climb ladders and safely enter underground structures.
- Bend, stoop, climb, twist, walk, and stand for extended periods.
- Perform physically demanding work.
- Work outdoors and in inclement weather.
- Safely operate and work around heavy vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
