The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Librarian I at the Berkeley Public Library! 

We are currently hiring for a Children's Librarian for the Tarea Hall Pittman South Branch, located in the South Berkeley neighborhood. The incumbent will have the opportunity to plan and deliver engaging and developmentally appropriate storytimes and other programs for youth ages birth through grade school. They will perform outreach, engage with community partners, support collection management, and work as part of a vibrant, fun, and diverse team of library professionals. The ideal candidate will have a love for children's services, strong knowledge of children's literature and childhood development, experience serving youth, and a deep desire to share library joy with kids and families.

This recruitment will create an eligible list that will be used by the department to fill future temporary and/or career positions in the next 12 months. A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this classification is equivalent to graduation from a college or university with a Master's degree in Library Science. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college coursework on a year-for-year basis.

Other requirements include a valid California driver's license is desireable. When driving on City business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.Applications must be received by Monday, April 20, 2026, at 5:00 pm PST and must include a completed application and resume. The exam process will include, but may not be limited to:
  • Application review for minimum qualifications and required documents (qualifying experience will be calculated based on the administrative review date)
  • Competitive review and assessment of the applicant's education, training, and experience (Training & Experience)
  • Review of Supplemental Questionnaire

Tests may consist of any combination of written, oral, or other exercises or assessment procedures that test content and may include, but are not necessarily limited to, typing, math, reading, writing, and analytical skills; problem-solving ability; computer and software proficiency, or any other job-related knowledge, skill, ability, or qualification. The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews slated for a date to be determined.

Salary : $87,893 - $105,385
