SUMMARY Conducts fire and life safety inspections in accordance with all applicable Codes and Standards; carries out fire safety and prevention initiatives; and assists with fire investigations as required.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Reporting relationships, work assignments, and work schedules may be subject to change in order to meet City needs or operational requirements.  Attendance at work and the ability to get along with the public, supervisors and co-workers are essential elements of this position.  Other duties may be assigned.



Performs maintenance inspections and follow-up fire inspections.

 

Inspects buildings to locate hazardous conditions, fire code violations and unsafe conditions.

 

Knowledgeable in the International Fire Code, the Arkansas State Fire Code, and inspection practices.

 

Identify corrective actions necessary to bring properties into compliance with applicable fire codes laws regulations and standards. Communicate corrective measures to public.

 

Prepares written correspondence and reports, and issues written orders to eliminate fire hazards.

 

Reviews existing building and site plans for fire access and water supplies, and works with developers, architects, contractors, water purveyors and building officials to ensure code compliance.

               

Inspects daycare facilities and healthcare facilities for compliance with the fire and safety codes as required by Department of Human Services (DHS).

 

Responsible for conducting required school inspections twice a year per Arkansas State law.

 

Investigates complaints of fire and life safety hazards.

 

 Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with the public, those in the development business, other City departments, and fire department personnel. 

 

Ability to communicate well orally and in writing. Must be able to assimilate complex information from a number of code and standards sources.

 

Ability to make presentations to small and large groups of all ages, using different methods of communicating such as PowerPoint presentations, practical demonstrations, and verbally communicating a fire safety message.  

 

Conducts target-hazard and specialty inspections (i.e. public schools, large facilities, etc.)

 

May be required to assist with public fire education, including school fire safety programs (Fire Prevention Week), industrial fire education, and home safety classes.

 

Maintains records/administration requirements.

 

Attend continuing education classes as required.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. 

 

REASONING ABILITY Able to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS.

 

  • Valid Drivers license
  • Firefighter I and II Certification preferred
  • IFSAC Fire Inspector I certification completed, or will complete within one (1) year
  • NFA (National Fire Academy) Fire Inspection Principles I & II class completed within two (2) years
  • ICC (International Code Council) certification for Fire Inspector I within one (1) year
  • Other qualifications or certifications as needed

The employee is occasionally required to work in outdoor weather conditions, high or precarious places, work around operating machinery, and work around hazardous and potentially hazardous chemicals or materials, and work/operate using personnel protective equipment.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
