Theatrical Technician (Electrician and/or Lighting Focused)

The Theater Technician will work as an all-around theater technician. The role will require a willingness to learn new skills, as well as expand and/or adjust previously owned skills. The Theater technician is a part-time tole which will work an average of 8-15 hours a week. Hours may extend during high production timelines, and in the Summer. The theater technician is expected to be a leader and role model to the community as well as a mentor to volunteers and participants. Bellevue Youth Theatre is a Community driven program that seeks to break down barriers and expand participation to all who cross our doors. The ideal candidate would place community over artistry, and mentorship over production value. All Theatrical Technicians reports directly to the Production Manager, Moises Hinojos. 

This is a continuous, part-time position. Upon the completion of one production, technician will be assigned to new projects. This position can anticipate working on approximately 10 productions a year in addition to camps, averaging 8-15 hours per week, annually, with the option for more during the busiest production seasons. 

The Bellevue Youth Theatre is dedicated to providing theater arts opportunities for all young people, regardless of income or ability. We produce 10-12 mainstage shows a year in addition to 12 weeks of theatre day camps. We also offer technical support for various events around the City of Bellevue.

The following are duties and responsibilities assigned to the Theatrical Technician. This role will be responsible for the following duties which include but are not limited to:

• Assist with tracking lighting, sound, and scenic elements throughout the production, and report progress to Production Manager and Artistic Director.
• Assist Production Manager with the scenic load-in/out for shows. 
• Assist Production Manager/Technical director with light hang and light focus for shows. 
• Ability to do basic programming on a standard Element Lightboard. 
• Ability to do basic programming on a Yamaha SLQ5 Soundboard. 
• Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of theater equipment. 
• Assist with outside city events such as Movies In The Park, Bellevue Family 4th of July Celebration, and other city events. 
• Assist as technician or House Manager for rentals. 
• Attend All Staff meetings. 
• Assist with All Staff events and fundraisers as needed. 
• Supervise and train volunteers in scenic, lighting, or sound. 
• Utilize proper safety practices and procedures. 
• Maintain a variety of files and records; enter and retrieve information from a computer. 
• Able to work weekends and nights as needed. 
• Assist with Day Camps, as needed. 
• Other duties as assigned

Supervision Received and Exercised: 

• Reports to designated Program Coordinator.

Knowledge of: 

• Theatrical production protocols. 
•  Electrics and lighting with regards to safety, hanging, focusing, and programming.

Ability to: 

• Work with limited budgets and resources to create theatrical props designs.
• Communicate with a variety of theatre personnel in a timely and professional manner.
• Oversee volunteers, including many with various skills and abilities. 
• Communicate with Production Manager and Production Team. 
• Attend Production Meetings.
• Keep accurate records of inventory and purchase requests.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

• Use woodworking tools safely.
• Understand
• Communicate with staff, volunteers, and participants in a kind and respectful manner, both verbally and in writing.

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Education/Training: 

• Some coursework (or equivalent study) in theatre, technical theatre, electrics/carpentry, scenic painting, graphic design, or a combination thereof. 
• Must be at least 18 years of age. 
• Some theatrical design experience preferred.
• At least 2 years working in community or professional theatre. 

Other Requirements

• Must pass a criminal background check.

• Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. The noise level is the work environment is moderate to high.

• Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire
• Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 8-20 hours per week with an increase during performance weeks.
