CEA HOURLY RANGE $26.18 - $34.20
POSITION TITLE: Fabrication Technician
REPORTS TO: Fleet Superintendent
SUPERVISES: N/A
PURPOSE OF POSITION: This is skilled work in fabrication, maintenance, and repair of vehicles and equipment. Work may include but is not limited to the fabrication, repair, painting and modification of new and existing equipment. Skilled welding and the understanding of vehicle electrical and hydraulic systems is a crucial part of this position. Perform duties on an on-call basis as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Makes repairs and modifications to broken pieces of equipment including snowplows, truck cabs, fuel tankers, automotive bodies and other equipment.
Performs equipment fabrication on vehicle accessories as necessary, including flat beds, snow plows, and sand spreaders.
Prepares equipment and vehicles for painting by sandblasting; paints equipment and vehicles; hard surfaces earth moving equipment.
Modifies and installs hydraulic systems in various vehicles and equipment.
Operates acetylene, arc, heliarc, TIG and MIG welders; cutters; grinders; power presses; drill presses; plasma cutters; and various other hand, power tools and fabrication equipment.
Operates City vehicles, safely and in compliance with traffic laws and regulations, in the performance of job duties.
Perform set up, program calculations, maintenance and repairs of brine spray systems on trucks.
Perform maintenance and repairs of brine mixing tanks.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs related duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:
Knowledge of the standard procedures, methods, tools and materials of the metal working trades.
Knowledge of the properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals encountered in fabrication work.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices.
Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials common to the metal work trades.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints and sketches; and to work from oral or written
instructions.
Skill in maintaining effective work relationships with supervisors, subordinates and associates.
Ability to maintain accurate records.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:
High school diploma or the equivalent.
Must possess a valid motor vehicle operators’ license at the time of hire and maintain throughout the course of employment.
Must obtain a Commercial Drivers’ License within six months of hire and maintain throughout the course of employment.
Must possess and maintain National Safety Council Forklift Training Certification.
Must have successfully completed the following courses (or acceptable equivalent certification):
Hydraulics, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG)
2 – 4 years employment experience in welding fabrication.
Experience or training in equipment, electrical and hydraulics preferred.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work duties require a considerable amount of physical activity including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping and climbing ladders.
An incumbent must have the ability to lift up to 100 lbs. and possess the coordination and manual dexterity
necessary to operate hand and power tools and equipment
The work environment is noisy, dusty, hot and/or cold and work is performed in a variety of outdoor environments throughout the year.
Operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment requires that an incumbent be able to perform repetitive hand, wrist, shoulder and leg movements, as well as bend, climb and crawl into, under and out of vehicles.
