Under general supervision, performs a variety of general and varied grounds-keeping and maintenance work in the care and maintenance of parkways, street medians and other City-owned areas; performs work in the pruning, care and maintenance of shade and street trees; installs, repairs, and maintains irrigation systems for landscaped areas; performs semi-skilled utility maintenance work at assigned City facilities and adjacent grounds; removes graffiti from private and public areas; operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools and equipment; and performs related duties as assigned.

  1. Performs various grounds maintenance functions; mows, trims, edges, fertilizes, aerates, and waters lawns, medians, and other City easement areas; weeds, prunes, mulches, feeds, fertilizes, and irrigates plants, shrubs, trees, and ground-cover from City grounds, landscaped areas, and athletic fields.
  2. Edges around walkways, plant beds, fences and related grounds areas.
  3. Maintains, trims and prunes shrubs, hedges and trees; plants trees, shrubs, flowers, and grass as necessary.
  4. Performs grounds maintenance chemical application duties; spray trees, shrubs, flowers, and grass with low toxic herbicides and insecticides; ensures proper application of all materials; ensures equipment is operating properly; performs all duties in compliance with City and mandated health and safety rules and regulations.
  5. Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of irrigation systems for landscaped areas; inspects and services irrigation systems to ensure proper operation.
  6. Cleans and maintains landscaped areas, athletic fields, paved areas, paths, walkways, and playgrounds; sweeps and blows asphalt areas; picks up litter, garbage, and debris from landscaped areas; remove graffiti from City-owned structures and facilities.
  7. Performs general clean-up of City property including picking up refuse and debris; loads trucks with debris and material.
  8. Operates a variety of power-driven equipment such as power mowers, edger's, sweepers, blowers, chain saws, jack hammers, dump trucks, skip loaders, sod cutter, brush chippers, and other equipment with a variety of attachments; drives light trucks.
  9. Performs preventative maintenance to vehicles, equipment, and tools and services and makes minor adjustments and repairs; reports the need for major repairs and maintenance.
  10. Conducts traffic control when working in traffic areas of the City; installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of maintenance or repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.
  11. Assists in the installation and repair of fences.
  12. Prepares set-ups and take downs for special events including moving and arranging bleachers, furniture, chairs, tables, and related equipment .
  13. Hauls and distributes sand, asphalt, dirt, concrete, sawdust, straw, and other materials where needed; digs ditches as necessary.
  14. Installs and repairs playground equipment.
  15. Assists maintenance workers in performing a variety of building trades work, painting, and custodial duties as necessary.
  16. Responds to public inquiries and request in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  17. Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to work performed.
  18. Performs related duties, as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Operations, services, and activities of a building and grounds maintenance program.
Methods and techniques of planting, transplanting, cultivating, pruning and maintaining a variety of lawns, ground cover, plants, shrubs, hedges and trees.
Methods, techniques, and equipment used in arboriculture, including species identification, planting, pruning and maintenance.
Soil preparation and enrichment.
Methods and equipment used in weed and insect control and treating plant diseases.
Installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
Operations and maintenance of a wide variety of commonly used hand and power landscaping tools and equipment.
Practices and procedures of traffic control including proper placement of cones, barricades and warning devices.
Principles and practices of record keeping.
Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
     
Ability to:
Perform a variety of grounds maintenance and repair work in the care and maintenance of parkways, street medians and other City-owned areas.
Learn and perform tree planting, transplanting, pruning, trimming, and removal.
Recognize common plants, plant diseases and insect pests.
Use and operate vehicles and equipment, hand tools, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
Perform a variety of tasks and heavy manual labor for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures including safety around work areas in high traffic.
Set up a safe work site including cones, signs and directing traffic.
Maintain records including time, material, and equipment use records.
Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Respond to requests for information from the public, City departments and outside agencies
Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
Possess effective interpersonal skills, using tact, patience and courtesy.
Use sound professional judgment.
Perform routine multi-tasking functions.
Understand and work within the course and scope of duties, authority and responsibilities.
Relate effectively to people of a variety of cultures, languages, disabling conditions and socioeconomic situations.
Analyze situations and apply departmental rules and regulations effectively, as well as common sense where no guidelines are readily available.
Work with minimum supervision.
Maintain records including time, material, and equipment use records.
Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
 Education/Training:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience:
One year of experience in general grounds keeping, maintenance, general labor, electrical or plumbing is desirable.
License or Certificate:
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and maintain possession of such license during the course of employment
