What are the responsibilities and job description for the Firefighter position at City of Battle Creek, MI?
The City of Battle Creek is looking to establish a firefighter eligibility list in accordance with the Civil Service Act. The employment process for establishing that list is as follows:
- Complete the city's employment application.
- Participate in the entry-level written Civil Service Examination.
- If examination is accomplished with a 70 percent or higher, a physical agility exam will be scheduled. The physical agility consists of an obstacle course simulation of various firefighting tasks, with time restrictions.
- Upon satisfactory completion of the physical agility, an oral interview is held before a panel.
- The scores from the written and oral examinations are combined and individuals are placed on an eligibility list. When job openings become available, candidates are considered in groups of five, starting at the top of the list. This list will remain in effect for two years.
BCFD firefighters perform emergency response duties for the protection of life and property; participates in fire prevention activities; performs a variety of housekeeping, equipment, and apparatus maintenance chores; performs related work as apparent or assigned. Work performed under the supervision of the Fire Lieutenant or another designated official.
This position includes a 3 Blue Cross Blue Shield medical plans to select from, 2 vision plans through VSP, free dental though Delta Dental and life insurance, all of which are available on day one. Employees may contribute to a 457 Retirement Plan though MissionSquare, which has a 1:1 match up to 3%. Employees in this position are also required to contribute into the Police and Fire Pension program.
