The Information Technology (IT) Technician reports directly to the Information Technology Manager. These two IT positions, which comprise the Information Technology department, are included in the Administration department of the City's organizational structure. Although this position supports all of the physical locations of the City departments and buildings, the IT Technician is stationed at the Government Center.
The primary responsibilities of the IT Technician include, but not limited to, the configuration, installation, support and maintenance of all City desktop computers, printers, laptops, and Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs).
This position is the first line helpdesk resource with the users as well as supporting the IT Manager in any requested projects that land outside of the primary responsibilities. This includes network administration, disaster recovery, budgeting, purchasing, and general IT support.
Essential Job Functions
PC and Printer Support/Installation
The IT Technician is responsible for configuring and installing all pc hardware and software including printers. The IT Tech performs all first line maintenance and is responsible for troubleshooting problems, performing upgrades and making repairs to the workstations. Coordinating warranty work with appropriate vendors and actively maintaining an equipment inventory database of all City hardware is also necessary.
Help Desk/Software Support
The IT Technician is the primary helpdesk contact for city staff regarding software and/or hardware related problems. The IT Technician will troubleshoot, investigate and respond to these requests.
Training
The IT Technician will provide basic instructional assistance to all users as it pertains to software applications supported by the IT Department. Off-site training will be coordinated as needed.
Network Administration
The IT Technician directly supports the IT Manager with the overall performance, integrity, and security of the network and its related components. Duties include: scheduling and monitoring nightly server backups, perform weekly virus scans and update data files when available from the Internet, creating or modifying user accounts and user accesses, perform software upgrades for network applications as needed, and maintain and enforce proper software licensing on the servers and all of the workstations.
The IT Technician will also assist in the development of policies and procedures as it relates to the technology usage of the City.
Google WorkSpace
The IT Technician will assist the IT Manager in creating and/or modifying Google accounts for City staff, Mayor and Board members. Google offers a Suite of software products including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Sites.
The IT Technician will support the internal sites page, BallwinNet, used by staff. There are support requirements for the Police department's customized page that must be maintained and up-to-date as requested.
Door Access System
The IT Technician will have full access to the building access security system and its related database. This position has the ability to add, change, and delete user profiles as requested.
In the absence of the IT Manager, the IT Technician should coordinate service-related calls and requests with the security system vendor.
Telecommunications
The IT Technician will assist in the day-to-day management of the telephone, voicemail, and call recording systems and user equipment. The IT Technician will have the ability to create, delete, and change user profiles and provide assistance to users with any problems or questions concerning these systems.
In the absence of the IT Manager, the IT Technician should coordinate service-related calls and requests with the telephone vendor.
Assigned Equipment
Designated staff receives equipment for job performance enhancement. These devices include cell phones, laptops, Apple iPads, Microsoft Surface, etc. The IT Technician will maintain an inventory of the assigned devices and assist users with issues and support requests. The IT Technician will secure the returned devices and prepare for re-assignment to staff as directed.
Cell phones are upgraded on rotation cycle defined by vendor. The IT Technician will collect and "clean" the devices in preparation for resale at auction. Phones are required to be unlocked by vendor prior to auction.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
The position requires technical background involving all aspects of computer technology including desktop workstations, servers, data storage, LAN/WAN environment, the internet, and portable devices. Must have knowledge and experience with network security, computer/server hardware, software applications, and Google WorkSpace.
This position will require someone that is willing and able to do a wide variety of tasks, both physical and computer-based. Ideal candidates will be reliable, responsible, flexible, and a solid team player. Individual must be responsive to critical situations and be able to perform multiple tasks while maintaining the competence to work independently and prioritize duties.
Good presentation skills needed to communicate effectively to direct supervisor as well as City management staff and must work well with all levels of computer users.
Position requires physical capabilities. Lifting equipment up to 50lbs or more may be required. Environmental requirements include working outdoors possibly in extreme temperatures.
The position may require work during the non-standard 8am - 5pm hours Monday-Friday. This is determined by the IT Manager and typically involves system down or emergency.
Associates in Networking or equivalent preferred.
This position requires a minimum of two years experience in a Microsoft networked environment. Must be proficient with Windows 10 operating system and MS Office and Google Workspace.
Must have PC knowledge to perform computer/server maintenance and experience with Microsoft server
applications.
