AQUATICS INSTRUCTOR

Job Summary
This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and teaching aquatics classes for the Parks and Recreation Department. This position reports to the Aquatics and Special Events Coordinator.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would enable the employee to perform the job duties. Preferred possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding or equivalent certification. Preferred possession of a current American Red Cross Basic Swim Instructor (BSI) or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.
Special Qualifications
The work is light work, which requires exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring manual dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed in a public indoor or outdoor aquatics environment. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasionally cold, hot, or inclement weather. The employee may need to use small office equipment such as computers, multi-function copy machines, and telephone systems. The work may require use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Special Qualifications
- Possession of or the ability to readily obtain CPR/First Aid/AED certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
- Possession of or the ability to readily obtain certification(s) for the specific aquatics class(es) assigned to instruct (i.e., Aqua Zumba, Aqua Aerobics, Aqua Yoga, etc.)
- Knowledge of CPR, First Aid, and AED procedures.
- Knowledge of department and recreation center rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of safety principles and procedures involved in teaching aquatics classes.
- Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Skill in teaching others safe aquatics techniques, styles, and exercise practices.
- Skill in teaching others swimming techniques, styles, and safe aquatics practices.
- Skill in using computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
- Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
- Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
