Legal Specialist/Admin. Asst. to Mayor

Salary Range: $66,338.76 - $89,557.02 Annually
The City of Attleboro seeks a Legal Specialist/Admin. Asst. to Mayor, who has diverse responsibilities originating from the Mayor’s office that require frequent use of discretion, initiative, and independent judgment, as actions can have a significant effect upon City operations or public relations activities.
Duties include independently responds to matters not requiring the direct attention of the Mayor or City Solicitor. Reviews City contracts prior to submission to the City Solicitor and returns them to departments when irregularities are identified. Serves as liaison between City departments, the City Solicitor, and outside counsel, and ensures that relevant matters are brought to the attention of the Mayor and City Solicitor. Reviews Municipal Council votes to identify and initiate any required follow-up actions. Administers claims filed against the City, including the preparation of all related documentation, correspondence, and investigative materials. Prepares and maintains updates to the City Ordinances, City Charter, and accepted provisions of the Massachusetts General Laws. Provides administrative support to the Licensing Board, including preparation of annual liquor license renewals and review of applications prior to submission to the Licensing Board and the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC). Acts as liaison between the Attleboro Cultural Council and the City, entering purchase orders and reviewing submitted invoices. Participates in negotiations related to the cable television contract and administers the citywide insurance policy. May serve on boards or commissions as designated by the Mayor or attend meetings on their behalf. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required for special events. Assists in the planning and execution of City-sponsored events, including, but not limited to, the inauguration ceremony for elected officials, Winterfest, and other holiday celebrations. Performs related work as required.
Associates Degree in public or business administration, communication or related concentration, or certification as a legal professional and five years of experience as a legal professional or assistant or any equivalent combination of education and experience. follow oral and written instructions required. Valid State Driver’s License and Notary Public Commission Certification required. Through knowledge of office procedures and office equipment. Ability to use a computer for word processing and spreadsheets. Understanding of legal terminology and local government operations. Ability to deal effectively with city officials and the general public, with tact and diplomacy. Knowledge of Massachusetts liquor licensing laws.
