General Description:
For the duration of a seven-week camp, this position will monitor swimmers at Lake Allatoona Residential Camp Site, maintain strict observance to safety rules and procedures; perform rescues for distressed swimmers using assigned rescue techniques and equipment; teach Learn to Swim and track progress for campers. This position will live onsite Monday night through Friday morning. Room and board will be provided.

Works under direct supervision and follows standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Lifeguard Certification
1-2 years of lifeguard experience or 3 summers
Must pass background check for criminal and child protective findings.
Must pass a drug screening.
Preferred Education & Experience
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
1-2 years of open water lifeguard experience or 3 summers.
Water Safety Instructor Certification.
Licensures and Certifications
First Aid/CPR
Lifeguard certification

Responsibilities

- Rescues distressed swimmers using rescue techniques and equipment in an open water environment.
- Examines injured persons and administers first aid or CPR, if necessary.
- Contacts emergency personnel in case of serious injury.
- Patrols or monitors assigned area of lake and ensures that all safety and health rules are being followed.
- Completes and maintains records.
- Teach Learn to Swim for campers using approved agency modules; track progression using resources provided.
- Assist camp operations as requested
- Warns swimmers of inclement weather, unsafe areas or safety infractions.
- Inspects safety equipment e.g. Life rings, extension poles, emergency stretchers or accessories, emergency medical kits, personnel lifts to ensure that all are in good working order.
- Knowledge of all rules, regulations and laws governing lake operations.
- Knowledge of water sports e.g. water polo, etc.
- Competent swimming skills, strength and stamina to perform tasks of lifeguard.
- Lifeguard certification.
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Water safety training.
- Ability to compile, prepare and maintain assortment of reports and records.

Additional Information:
- City of Atlanta required training June 1st – June 8th, 2026.
- Allatoona Campground specific site training and Outdoor Activity Training.
- Summer staff will be required to work a 10 - hour shift Monday – Friday from June 8th – July 24th, 2026. Vacation requests during this time will not be approved.
- All summer staff must be actively involved in the lake with campers during swim times and wear a bathing suit (one-piece for females, swimming trunks with lining for males). Staff is not required to know how to swim or teach swim lessons.
