Job Summary/Objective:
The Visual Data Analyst plays a critical role in transforming complex public sector data into clear, compelling, and actionable visual insights. This position is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining interactive dashboards, reports, and data visualizations that enable city leadership, departments, and the public to understand trends, monitor performance, identify challenges, and make informed decisions related to city services and strategic initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a strong blend of data analysis skills, an eye for design, and excellent communication abilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Data Visualization Design and Development:
Design and create high-impact, user-friendly, and interactive dashboards, reports, and infographics using leading visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Qlik Sense, etc.
Translate complex data sets and analytical findings into clear, intuitive, and visually appealing representations for diverse audiences, including executive leadership.
Develop compelling data narratives that highlight key insights, trends, and potential areas for intervention.
Ensure data visualizations adhere to best practices in visual design, data storytelling, and accessibility standards.
Iteratively refine visualizations based on user Executive Director or Deputy Director feedback and evolving analytical needs.
Data Analysis & Interpretation:
Collaborate with the Performance and Data Analyst and other department stakeholders to understand analytical requirements and business questions.
Extract, clean transform, and load data from various city government systems and databases (e.g., public safety, 311 service requests, public works, etc.)
Perform exploratory data analysis to identify patterns, anomalies, correlations, and potential insights.
Apply statistical methods where appropriate to validate findings and support data-driven conclusions.
Assist in identifying and defining key performance indicators and metrics relevant to city services and operational efficiency.
Reporting and Communication:
Prepare and deliver regular and ad-hoc performance reports, data briefs, and presentations using compelling visualizations.
Document data sources, methodologies, and visualization logic for knowledge sharing and reproducibility.
Tool Management and Best Practices:
Maintain and update existing dashboards and reporting infrastructure.
Stay abreast of new developments in data visualization tools, techniques, and best practices.
Contribute to the establishment and adherence to data governance, data quality, and visualization standards within the city government.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Graphic Design with a data focus, or a related quantitative field.
Experience: Minimum of 2 – 5 years of progressive experience in data analysis and visualization, preferably in a public sector, non-profit or related environment.
Proven experience developing interactive dashboards, newsletters, and reports using industry-standard tools (e.g., Power BI, Viso, etc.)
Technical Skills:
Expert proficiency in at least one leading data visualization tool (e.g., Power BI)
Strong proficiency in SQL for data extraction and manipulation.
Experience with data cleaning and transformation.
Familiarity with statistical software.
Knowledge of UX/UI principles as applied to data visualization.
Soft Skills:
Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with keen attention to detail.
Strong visual communication skills with an ability to tell stories with data.
Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
