General Description and Classification Standards:

This position oversees and directs staff to maintain parks and amenities within the COA, ensuring maintenance services are scheduled, planned, and recorded to meet performance standards. They lead training efforts to enforce safety precautions when operating equipment efficiently. Responsibilities include maintaining high standards, preparing internal memoranda, inspection reports, evaluations, and accident reports. Additionally, they supervise general ground maintenance activities, conduct park inspections, and complete work orders promptly. Duties involve performing maintenance tasks such as removing tree limbs and debris, mowing grass, pruning, and fixing benches. They ensure park cleanliness and safety by removing trash, emptying garbage cans, and inspecting playgrounds. The supervisor ensures the crew is equipped and ready for daily tasks, including landscape work and special projects. They lead by example, instructing team members, holding them accountable for assignments, and handling paperwork with computer proficiency.

Supervision Received:

Works under very general supervision. May work independently or collaborate with other workers to complete assigned tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.

  • Organizes meetings with department staff and community members to disseminate parks information and address concerns pertaining to the department
  • Represents department by presenting park development efforts to neighborhood associations and other organizations to foster support and gather feedback. Reports meeting findings to appropriate personnel.
  • Drafts plans and specifications for assigned projects.
  • Serves on assigned committees and task forces.
  • Manages accreditation efforts for the department; ensures parks services and facilities adhere to federal, state, and local laws and regulations while meeting or exceeding accepted standards.
  • Coordinates maintenance/landscape planning and develops repair schedules for park grounds and facilities.
  • Assists in the review of development plans and park designs.
  • May oversee temporary or contract workers as needed.
  • Completes and submits paperwork daily.
  • Cleans work areas by removing litter and emptying trash cans.
  • Ensures playground safety.
  • Maintains pavilions and grounds, including mowing, weeding, edging, pruning, and painting benches.
  • Removes debris and graffiti while also inspecting signs, playgrounds, tennis courts, baseball fields, basketball fields, and other park amenities.
  • Conducts park inspections and processes work orders.
  • Supervises staff, including ordering and managing inventory, maintaining facilities, and handling employee affairs.
  • Monitors staff, provides training, and conducts inspections and job appraisals.
  • Completes end-of-day reports and operates equipment such as riding mowers, pickup trucks, blowers, loaders, dump trucks, garbage trucks, landscape trucks, trimmers, and chainsaws.
  • Utilizes computers for administrative tasks.
  • Maintains high standards of accuracy and safety, prepares internal reports, and ensures compliance with city maintenance standards.
  • Picks up supplies, cleans maintenance buildings, verifies employee licenses, and ensures employee safety.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations relating to parks operations and services.
  • Knowledge of landscape design and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with land planning, irrigation, and horticulture.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).
  • Skill in preparing clear written reports and public presentations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare concise reports and maintain accurate records.
