STREET SWEEPER OPERATOR
CITY OF ASTORIA, OREGON
Summary
The Sweeper Operator is responsible for safely operating motorized street sweeping equipment to effectively and efficiently clean City streets, curbs, gutters, parking lots, and public rights-of-way. Duties also include performing limited maintenance and minor repairs on street cleaning equipment, as well as completing a variety of maintenance tasks within the assigned area of responsibility, including cleaning catch basins. The Sweeper Operator will also support Public Works with additional tasks and projects as assigned.
Interviews will be scheduled for the week of January 12th, 2026. Anticipated start date February 1, 2026.
SCHEDULE
This is a full-time position, working 40 hours per week. The Sweeper Operator's schedule adjusts seasonally to ensure efficient access to areas of town while accounting for traffic and daylight hours. From approximately November through March, the regular shift is five days per week from 3:30 AM to 12:00 PM. From approximately April through October, the regular shift is four days per week from 3:30AM to 2:00PM.

Essential Functions
- Operates street sweepers and other related equipment to sweep City streets, parking lots, and public works yard; clears debris from right-of-ways; cleans storm drains and inlets; identifies and reports hazardous conditions.
- Adjusts and operates brooms, guards, and other related auxiliary equipment; changes brooms as necessary.
- Inspects sweeper for safety and mechanical defects; checks fuel, fluid levels, air pressure and hydraulic systems; performs preventive maintenance and reports the need for required maintenance; inspects auxiliary equipment for proper operating condition and safety.
- Washes and cleans sweeper and auxiliary equipment as necessary.
- Responds to emergency clean-ups including spills; performs special sweeps as necessary.
- Maintains a variety of records and reports on street sweeping operations; logs daily reports.
- Assists with other Public Works tasks and projects when the sweeper is out of service for maintenance or repair, or as otherwise assigned.
- Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.
- Operates sanders, de-icers, and snow plows during periods of inclement weather.
- Performs related duties as required.
- May be required to work outside normal work hours in on-call and emergency situations.
Knowledge of
- Principles and practices of maintenance and repair activities related to sweeping operations.
- Common tools, materials, and motorized vehicles and equipment used in sweeping operations.
- City street system repair and maintenance.
- Basic mathematical principles.
- Safe work practices and policies.
- Operate a variety of equipment to include a street sweeper and snow plow.
- Use hand tools for basic maintenance.
- Adhere to traffic safety rules and regulations.
- Maintain sweeping route information.
- Drive safely under a variety of road and weather conditions.
- Remain focused and attentive during long periods of sitting while operating equipment.
- Remove catch basin grates and clean basins.
- Report any unsafe road conditions, hazards, water leaks, and damaged signs to a supervisor.
- Exercise caution when operating on confined streets and in congested traffic.
- Drive a right hand drive vehicle.
- Work independently and follow established routes.
- Operate equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain sweeper in proper working order.

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- One year of experience in operating a street sweeper or similar equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above described duties.
- Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes endorsement.
- Ability to pass a City-required background check which includes criminal, motor vehicle (DMV & FMCSA Clearinghouse), sex offender records checks, social security trace and drug screen.
- Residency within 30 minutes of City Limits.
- CPR and First Aid (training provided)
- Flagging (training provided)
- Class A Commercial Driver's License.
- Knowledge of the construction and maintenance of streets, water and sewer systems.
