SUMMARY
The City of Astoria is looking for a hard-working and motivated individuals to work on maintenance, repair, painting and landscaping work for the Public Works Operations division. This position may work individually with minimum supervision or as a member of a crew. This position supports operations which provide critical city services to the community.
SCHEDULE
This is a seasonal position that works 4 days per week, 8:00AM-4:30PM for a total of 16 days per month. The total hours budgeted for the entire season is 1,000 hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs manual and semiskilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of Public Works buildings and grounds, trails, streets, barricades, water system and sewer system; does related work as required.
- Maintains grounds of Public Works facilities, reservoirs, pump stations, headworks and shops by mowing, weeding, edging, pruning, and spraying for weed control.
- Constructs, maintains and repairs barricades, both stationary and portable.
- Maintains trails by cutting brush, spraying weeds, applying gravel, and repairing steps and handrails.
- Paints hydrants, traffic lines and symbols on city streets.
- Paints, cleans and maintains city buildings.
- Acts as a crew member in the repair and maintenance of sewer and water lines as needed.
- Repairs and installs street signs.
- Cuts brush and trims trees along roads, around hydrants and at storm sewer inlets.
- Applies cold patch to streets as necessary.
- Assists in Public Works office with phones, radio and clerical duties as needed.
- Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance
- Works collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
- Displays excellent communication skills including presentation, persuasion, and negotiation skills required in working with coworkers and including the ability to communicate effectively and remain calm and courteous under pressure.
- Respectfully takes direction from supervisor.

- Experience using hand and power tools and operation of lawn maintenance equipment.
- Experience driving a vehicle pulling a trailer.
- Possession of a valid Oregon Driver's license; safe driving record.
- Ability to pass a Post-job offer background check (including state and federal criminal records, social security number trace, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check).
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The employee must be able to occasionally perform heavy physical labor, lift up to 50 pounds, walk on uneven surfaces, climb ladders, be able to inspect and perform work in positions such as standing, bending, squatting, and sitting; able to utilize the senses of sight, hearing, and touch to recognize and to accurately evaluate equipment and process conditions. In the performance of job duties, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk or hear; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bend; twist; reach with hands and arms.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions and indoors under conditions that require attention to surroundings at all times.
