Plant Operator/Maintenance Technician - Variable

Pay Range - $20-$23/hr

Position Purpose

Responsible for assisting in the operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment Plants in accordance with all State and Federal regulations to produce clean, high-quality potable drinking water that meets all aspects of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

*This is a temporary, non-benefited position.

Essential Job Functions

• Performs water quality testing, monitors basic treatment plant operations and maintenance to ensure the production of high quality potable drinking water.
• Communicates with the Operations, Maintenance Personnel to assist in identifying plant equipment malfunctions.
• Performs walk-through inspections of both plants in their entirety.
• Performs basic maintenance, repairs and modifications of mechanical/pneumatic/hydraulic equipment.
• Operates assigned equipment and hand tools, including but not limited to: laboratory and analytical testing instruments, chemical feeders and plant operations computer systems.
• Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Communicates routinely with and informs Operations Supervisor, Plant Supervisor-SCADA, Plant Operators and Maintenance Personnel of system repair needs.
• Performs preventative maintenance, Plant Operations duties and assist Plant Electro-Mechanical/SCADA Process Control Technicians and Plant Operators as assigned, directed or needed.
• Assists the Water Quality Section and Water Operations Division when needed.
• Keeps and maintains mandated reports to comply with State and Federal Drinking Water Regulations.
• Utilizes City Asset Management and Time Accounting Programs to maintain work orders and Time accounting records.
• Responds to emergency situations as needed, whether in the regular scheduled work shift or after hours coverage.
• Responds to Citizen/Customer concerns and forwards to the appropriate Division/Employee in a timely manner.
• Acts with the Customer in mind, responds to requests promptly and provides effective services or solutions for Customers.
• Demonstrates a respectful attitude towards Customers and Co-workers that promotes teamwork, open communication and effective Customer Service.
• Exercises appropriate level of initiative and judgment to make decisions within the scope of authority.

• Frequently operates a personal or City-owned motor vehicle to drive to and from work locations throughout the City.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

• Ability to work rotating 12 hour shifts; including weekends, hoidays and transitioning between day and night shifts as needed.
• Basic knowledge or the ability to learn water treatment plant operations, laboratory testing and plant maintenance practices, principles and procedures.
• Basic knowledge or the ability to learn the use of equipment and chemicals used for water treatment.
• Basic knowledge or the ability to learn mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and electronic equipment principles/practices/maintenance procedures.
• Basic written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic computer and software skills.
• Basic mechanical skills and the ability to learn proper maintenance procedures and purposes.
• Basic knowledge or the ability to learn proper safety practices and follow safety procedures, including but not limited to; lockout/tag-out, fall protection, confined space, chemical handling.
• Basic knowledge or the ability to learn State and Federal Drinking Water Regulations.
• Basic ability to adapt to and change priorities in order to meet treatment plant and customer needs.
• Basic ability to exercise initiative, judgment and decisions within scope of assigned authority.
• Basic ability to effectively communicate and interact with all levels of personnel within the City and Citizens in a positive, cooperative and professional manner.

• Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  

License & Certification Required

Work Experience Related

• Basic understanding of algebra and chemistry.

• Basic understanding of hand tools.

Work Experience Preferred

Other Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must pass a criminal background check and a driving record check, if required by the position.

Physical Demands

• Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50 pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions. Individuals in strenuous positions must successfully complete a physical examination to ensure their fitness for duty.
  

Hazards

• Occasional hazards that are predictable or well protected against (Hazardous waste, ladders, cleaning supplies, trips and falls).
  

Work Environment

• Regular exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements.

The City of Arvada does not offer benefits to temporary and/or seasonal employees. Temporary, Variable Hour and Health Plan Eligible employees will earn 1 hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum cap of 48 hours.
