- Work Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 5:30 am to 10:30 am
Under the general supervision of a Department Manager, this position performs a variety of maintenance, groundkeeping, and construction tasks in the City.
The City, at its discretion, may add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
Repairing and maintaining physical structures belonging to the City, cleaning and keeping the buildings in good repair, using hand tools and power tools.
Replacing defective electrical switches and other fixtures; performing minor painting, plumbing, and carpentry tasks such as painting structures, and repairing woodwork with carpenter's tools, repairing plumbing fixtures, repairing plaster and laying brick, building sheds and other outbuildings.
Maintaining grounds and areas along street right-of ways of the city. May repair and paint benches, handrails, and tables.
Inspect streets, alleys and sidewalks throughout the City.
May clean grounds and remove litter, grooms recreational areas, sprays lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides, using hand or automatic sprayer.
May rake and bag or bum leaves.
May water lawn and shrubs, using hose or by activating fixed or portable sprinkler system.
May repair fences, gates, walls, and walks, using carpentry and masonry tools.
May paint fences and outbuildings.
May perform ground maintenance duties, using tractor equipped with attachments, such as mowers, lime or fertilizer spreaders, and lawn roller.
May cut lawns, using hand mower or power mower, trim and edge around walks and walls using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools.
Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs, using shears, pruners or chain saw.
May clean buildings and keep them in good repair, performing minor painting, plumbing, and carpentry tasks.
Performs other duties as assigned relating to maintenance and repair of City facilities. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
PRE-EMPLOYMENT:
All employment offers are contingent upon successful completion of both a pre-employment physical exam, including a drug/alcohol test, and a criminal background investigation, which involves fingerprinting (A felony or misdemeanor conviction may disqualify the applicant from City employment).
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
The position has a 365-day probationary period, as outlined in the employee handbook.

The examination process for this recruitment may be comprised of one or any combination of the following: screening of the applicant's training, background, and experience; scored evaluation of responses on a supplemental application; written examination(s); qualifications appraisal oral examination; performance examination; or technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis. Only the most highly qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process. Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit as determined by these competitive examinations. The eligibility list for this classification will remain in effect for six months.
