What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electrician - Traffic position at City of Appleton?
This position involves infrequent after-hours duties related to emergency calls, project installations, and contractor inspections. It does not involve on-call duties or on-call rotation. Emergency work, as well as planned work, often involves lengthy exposure to all types of weather and direct exposure to heavy traffic on local and higher-speed roadways.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Installs, repairs, and maintains traffic signals, warning lights and controls
- Installs, repairs, and maintains streetlights and controls
- Installs, repairs, and maintains the City's traffic communications network field equipment
- Troubleshoots electrical problems
- Locates existing underground electrical and communications facilities
- Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works overtime and extra hours as required
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
- Works with Purchasing Division to order parts and supplies
- Assists in development of specifications for traffic signal and street lighting equipment
- Inspection of contractor installations of infrastructure
- Performs miscellaneous tasks as directed by supervisor
- Considerable knowledge of electrical systems, methods, electrical codes, and regulations
- Ability to learn and work with street lighting and traffic signal systems
- Ability to learn and work with custom software to configure and maintain traffic signal electronics
- Ability to learn and work safely in and around vehicular traffic
- Ability to troubleshoot traffic signal electrical and control system problems
- Ability to troubleshoot street lighting electrical and control system problems
- Ability to communicate effectively with other employees, contractors and the public in a courteous, positive, and tactful manner
- Ability to drive large trucks and other vehicular/construction equipment
- Ability to withstand an outdoor working environment during all seasons
- Ability to work above ground in a bucket truck
- Skill in the operation of electrical test equipment and hand and power tools
- Knowledge of and proficiency in Windows computer operating system and Microsoft Office programs
- Valid CDL driver’s license and good driving record, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire (City provides training if needed).
- Valid Wisconsin Journeyman Electrician or Master Electrician license
