Job Summary

The City of Annapolis is seeking a dedicated and skilled Equipment Operator II to join the Department of Public Works. In this role, you will be responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment including front end loaders, mechanical street sweepers, Vac-con trucks, snow plows, and sewer cameras. This position involves technical equipment operation and manual tasks necessary to support public works infrastructure, including sewage, water mains, and roadway maintenance and some administrative record keeping duties. This position requires working outdoors in extreme weather conditions and availability for emergency overtime work.

Essential Job Functions



The successful candidate will perform a diverse range of duties to ensure the safety and maintenance of City infrastructure:

Heavy Equipment Operation:
Operates sewer cameras, dump trucks, back hoes, front end loaders, street sweepers and snow plows to maintain public safety.

Utility & Infrastructure Support: Performs repairs on fire hydrants, patches asphalt, and performs contractor work as needed.

Snow & Ice Control: Operates dump trucks for salting and snow plowing operations to ensure safe roadways during inclement weather.

Sewer Maintenance: Performs daily maintenance on sewer system; operates sewer camera and records findings.

Equipment Care: Performs daily and weekly lubrication, maintenance, and adjustments on assigned equipment, while
maintaining accurate daily work logs and vehicle checklists.

Safety & Compliance: Secures job sites for safety, places safety signs a work sites, and operates equipment in compliance with traffic rules.

Work Coordination: Assists public works and refuse supervisors in planning and overseeing the work of others. Maintains work logs and inputs data into computer system.

Qualifications



Knowledge of traffic and safety rules and accident prevention practices

  • Skill in using sound judgment, tact and courtesy;
  • Skill in operating and maintaining heavy equipment such as backhoes, snow plows , trucks, and fleet equipment in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate and repair heavy or complex machinery and construction equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to make repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic and safety rules.
  • Ability to read utility 1" = 40' scale maps and operating manuals.
  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including a computer, copy machine or multi-line telephone system.
  • Ability to plan, communicate, and monitor the work of others.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Two (2) years of related experience in the operation of, and/or maintenance of machinery and construction equipment.

Special Qualifications:

  • Licensure: Possession of a valid Maryland Class “B” Commercial State Driver’s License with Endorsement N (Tank vehicle).
  • Screening: Consent to chemical substance screening consistent with mandated Federal, State, and City guidelines and programs, to include random tests for the detection of drug or alcohol use.

Employment Conditions




Working Conditions/Environment: Work outside year-round and be available for emergency overtime work as required.

Physical Ability:
Strength and agility sufficient to lift and maneuver heavy objects such as heavy tools and equipment, manhole covers, storm drain grates, and to climb into and operate large equipment, trucks, etc.; ability to withstand working outside in extreme weather conditions.

Visual Ability:
Sufficient to operate heavy equipment and trucks both day and night, to observe unsafe conditions of
roadways, to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions.

This position is designated as Safety Sensitive due to the tasks or duties that the employer reasonably believes could affect the safety and health of the employee performing the task, other individuals, and or may lead to damage to property. This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing to include pre-employment testing.

Salary : $48,531 - $77,744
