Director of Community & Economic Development

Role Description The Director of Community & Economic Development is a full-time, on-site role based in Amsterdam, NY, responsible for leading initiatives that strengthen the city’s economic vitality and community well-being. This role oversees the planning, development, and implementation of programs that attract and retain businesses, support workforce development, and promote neighborhood revitalization. The Director collaborates with local stakeholders, government agencies, nonprofits, and private partners to identify opportunities, secure funding, and coordinate projects that advance the city’s strategic goals. Daily responsibilities include managing department operations, preparing and monitoring budgets, developing policies, analyzing data and trends, and communicating progress to city leadership and the public. The role also includes supervising staff, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and representing the city at meetings, public events, and regional development initiatives.
Qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise in Community Economic Development and Economic Development, including program design and implementation.
• Knowledge of Urban Planning principles and practices, with experience in land use, zoning, and community revitalization projects.
• Background in Public Administration, including policy development, intergovernmental coordination, and stakeholder engagement.
• Proficiency in Budgeting and financial management, including grant administration, cost analysis, and resource allocation.
• Strong leadership, supervisory, and project management skills, with the ability to guide multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple initiatives.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, report writing, and community outreach.
• Ability to build collaborative relationships with residents, businesses, community organizations, and regional partners.
• Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, economics, business, or a related field; a master’s degree is preferred.
• Experience working in local government, economic development agencies, or community development organizations is highly beneficial.
• Familiarity with state and federal economic development programs, funding sources, and regulatory requirements.
