STARTING PAY: $21.63 per hour ($45,000.00 per year)

SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Environmental Health Program Manager, the Environmental Health Technician performs entry-level technical and field support work for Environmental Health programs within the City of Amarillo and the Amarillo Area Public Health District. This position assists Environmental Health Specialists and Program Managers with routine inspections, field investigations, public education activities, vector control operations, complaint response, data collection, and administrative support functions. Work is performed in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures and involves routine field and office assignments requiring attention to detail, effective communication skills, and the ability to work independently on assigned tasks. The position supports departmental efforts to protect public health and maintain compliance with applicable environmental health regulations and standards.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists Environmental Health Specialists and Program Managers with routine field inspections, investigations, and operational activities within assigned environmental health programs.

  • Supports vector control operations, including mosquito surveillance, abatement activities, trapping, monitoring, exposure to pesticides, and related field activities.

  • Assists with investigations involving environmental health nuisances, public complaints, sanitation concerns, and other public health-related issues.

  • Collects field data, photographs, samples, and other information necessary to support inspections, investigations, and departmental operations.

  • Provides educational information to the public regarding environmental health practices, sanitation requirements, and department services as directed.

  • Assists with preparing reports, maintaining records, entering data into departmental systems, and organizing documentation related to inspections and investigations.

  • Performs administrative duties including responding to phone calls and emails, scheduling appointments or inspections, maintaining files, and supporting office operations.

  • Assists with enforcement support activities, including preparing documentation and case materials for review by Environmental Health Specialists or Program Managers.

  • Operates departmental vehicles, field equipment, testing equipment, and related tools in support of assigned program activities.

  • Participates in departmental training and safety activities related to environmental health operations and field procedures.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school Diploma or equivalent

  • Experience conducting inspections, surveys and field investigations is preferred.

  • Achieves and maintains all required certifications and licenses within six (6) months of hire, or within the timeframe designated by the Director, as applicable to the assigned program.

  • Valid Texas Driver’s License Required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.

  • Ability to operate technical equipment such as test kits and all-terrain vehicles.

  • Ability to interact with the public, community partners, and other stakeholders in a professional and effective manner.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.

  • Exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Perform physical activities including balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, sitting, hearing, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, reaching, pulling, pushing, speaking, seeing, and talking.

  • Make rational decisions and perform repetitive motions.

  • Walk long distances on uneven terrain.

Employees assigned to work within the On-Site Sewage Facility (OSSF) program must also be able to enter and exit excavated holes or ditches without assistance.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee works in a dynamic environment that requires being sensitive to change and responsive to changing goals, priorities, and needs. The incumbent is subject to on-call and/or emergency call back as well as after hours, weekend and holiday work.
