The purpose of this position is to assist in maintaining the safety of the City's streets. This is accomplished by operating heavy equipment, making and installing street signs, sealing cracks in streets, filling potholes in streets with asphalt and pouring concrete curbs when necessary. Other duties may include directing traffic, ensuring worksite and work crew safety, performing maintenance on equipment and machinery, documenting work completed and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position may provide direction to other employees.

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Performs maintenance on the City's streets and roadways by operating heavy equipment and machinery such as trucks, AMZ and roller, filling potholes with asphalt, sealing cracks in the streets, utilizing roller to seal and even asphalt distribution, pouring concrete for curbs on roadways and laying asphalt.
  • Ensures roadway-driving safety by making traffic and street signs, locating designated area for City signs, preparing ground for sign placement, utilizing equipment such as compressor, jackhammer and anchors, and installing street signs in the ground.
  • Maintains City's heavy equipment, machinery and other tools by performing preventative maintenance, repairing equipment when needed, replacing faulty parts, determining what problems exist with equipment and ensuring equipment is properly and safely operating.
  • Ensures safety of maintenance and street crew, citizens and worksites by performing traffic control operations, placing cones in designated work areas, setting-up warning signs for drivers, and directing traffic when needed.
  • Completes administrative duties by documenting maintenance performed on equipment and machinery and reporting street maintenance as necessary.

Education & Experience
  Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus one (1) year of relevant work experience.

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.


Certification and Other Requirements
  • Valid Texas Class A Commercial Drivers License is required, with tanker endorsement preferred or the ability to obtain tanker endorsement within one (1) year from date of hire. 

Knowledge Of:

  • Street maintenance methods and procedures (e.g., pothole repair, crack sealing, curb pouring).
  • Operation and safety practices for heavy equipment (trucks, AMZ, roller, jackhammer, compressors, etc.).
  • Traffic control regulations and procedures.
  • Materials used in street construction and repair (asphalt, concrete, signage materials).
  • Preventative maintenance and basic mechanical repair techniques.
  • Workplace safety standards and hazard recognition.
  • City street layouts and signage placement standards.
  • Documentation and reporting protocols.


Skilled In:

  • Operating heavy machinery and tools safely and efficiently.
  • Pouring and finishing concrete for curbs and street repairs.
  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic and street signs.
  • Performing routine equipment inspections and basic repairs.
  • Implementing traffic control and worksite safety procedures.
  • Following written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Maintaining detailed and accurate maintenance records.
  • Working collaboratively with a crew and interacting professionally with the public.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and hand and power tools.

  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for long periods.
  • Ability to push, pull, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance frequently.  
  • Ability to lift 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
  • Ability to operate city or personal vehicle for business purposes.
