The top salary range for this position currently reaches $73,324.94. The position will receive a 5.0% salary increase in July 2026 and July 2027; bringing the top step salary to $80,840.72.
Essential Job Functions
Duties include, but are not limited to the following: Assists in one or more of a variety of skilled labor jobs in the construction and maintenance of streets and street components, applying knowledge of techniques and skill in the use of tools and equipment of the asphalt and concrete trades; may operate concrete mixer, refuse, dump and other trucks with or without trailers, skiploaders, screeds, and light pavement rollers; may be trained to operate graders, motor sweepers, heavy pavement and heavy pavement rollers; assist in and performs the building of forms for concrete construction; mixes and pours concrete, assists in the finishing work; rakes asphaltic concrete and performs skilled work in the constructing and resurfacing of streets with permanent paving materials; uses air tools in breaking through and compacting work; digs out trenches and construction areas, and back-fills manually; performs other manual labor as assigned; operates and makes minor adjustments to such power-driven street maintenance equipment as: Trucks, leaf loaders, skiploaders, air compressors, light rollers, screed, and airhammers; assists in loading and unloading trucks; sets and picks up barricades, warning lights and signs on construction jobs; may give work direction to one or two laborers.
Qualification Guidelines
Knowledge Of
Methods, terminology, tools and equipment used in concrete and asphalt street construction and maintenance; safety precautions necessary in working in traffic and with hand tools and motorized equipment; the operation and maintenance requirements of such equipment.
Skills/Abilities
Use hand and power tools; properly maintain tools and mechanized equipment; perform heavy manual labor; follow oral and written instructions.
Experience And/or Education
Any combination of experience and/or education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be the equivalent to completion of the tenth grade and one year experience in street repair.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid Class "C" California Driver License and the ability to obtain a valid Class "B" California Driver License within 90 days of the date of hire.
Selection Process
Applicants must complete an application online prior to the final filing date. Applications will be screened for qualifications, appropriate background, and only the most qualified will be invited to participate in the examination process. Successful candidates must achieve a minimum passing score in each of the test components. Applicants will be notified by e-mail as to the test date, time, and location. The examination process will include:
Oral Interview weighted at 100%
Candidates will be required to pass a City administered pre-employment physical and may be required to pass a thorough background investigation and polygraph examination as part of the selection process. Candidates who do not pass will be disqualified and removed from the eligibility list.
