An Overview
Youth Advisors assist with ensuring efficient and effective program operations by identifying and recruiting qualified youth; implementing program activities; recruiting private and public sector employers for programs; establishing good customer relations with employers and monitoring work site performance; assisting with the development of career readiness and career exploration curriculum and leading career readiness and life skills workshops; providing employment counseling; working with participants in developing good work habits; and serving as a role model.
What You Should Bring
The ideal candidates should have some knowledge of employment and training needs of economically disadvantaged youth; ability to work in collaboration with a team to coordinate and implement service plans; ability to work independently within the framework of complex scheduling and program regulations; ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal skills. Knowledge of MS Word and database management systems; Ability to be a team player with effective oral and written communications skills; Ability to align day to day work responsibilities to program objectives.
The Opportunity
- Determine applicants' eligibility for the Summer Youth Employment Program;
- Provide recommendations for the development of transition plans and activities that enhance participants employability and address barriers to participants achieving employment goals;
- Facilitate Career Readiness and Life Skills workshops for program participants;
- Conduct program orientation for participants and work site supervisors;
- Conduct weekly work/training site visits to provide guidance and support to participants and employers;
- Assist program participants in determining their transportation options;
- Utilize Web Harmony as primary source for case management notes and documentation;
- Maintain participant records related to hours worked, attendance, and wages;
- Prepare and distributes required program paperwork;
- Identify programmatic problems and seeks appropriate resolution from supervisor;
- Perform special duties / projects as assigned.
About the Department
The Center for Economic Support provides programs and services for Public Benefits, Community Services, and Employment and Training. Our mission is to provide direct services to City of Alexandria residents in need of temporary assistance with food, shelter, employment and State medical assistance as they strive toward self-sufficiency.
Completion of college-level courses in counseling, education, social work or related field; one year of experience in human service work involving public contact; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence.
BA/BS in Social Science, Business or Education; At least one year of experience working in job development with economically disadvantaged youth. At least one year of experience with utilizing database management systems to support case work activities.
This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment checks to include: Criminal Record Check; VA State Child Abuse/Neglect Registry; Medicare/Medicaid Fraud Database; Driver's License from state of residence and education/certifications.
This is a Full-Time, temporary position.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 5:00PM.
