An Overview
The Alexandria Police Department is seeking a highly qualified System Programmer Specialist to provide lead supervision to a small team of support engineers. This position performs technical work configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Microsoft server, desktop, and software products. Responsibilities include configuration, imaging, and deployment; endpoint management and security; business continuity; and issue resolution.
Major responsibilities include Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MEMCM) and related components, Microsoft Active Directory and Group Policy, and failover clustering. The System Programmer Specialist also plays a key role in the technical implementation of new technology initiatives and upgrades to existing systems. In addition, this position manages the full hardware lifecycle, including procurement, deployment, maintenance, and replacement of equipment supporting departmental operations.
This position works under the general supervision of the System Operations Commander, who has department-wide responsibility for information technology systems.

The Opportunity – Examples of Work
- Provides lead supervision and guidance to a small team of support engineers
- Maintains Windows server and workstation hardware and software and leads the planning and deployment of desktops/laptops for the Police Department
- Administers Active Directory organizational unit and file share security for the Police Department; manages and administers Advanced Group Policy Management
- Administers MEMCM for automated provisioning, configuration management, and software updates
- Advanced troubleshooting of IT systems and network connectivity – diagnoses issues and consults with other City departments and vendors, when necessary, to resolve problems
- Ensures business continuity and disaster recovery using Windows and SQL clusters
- Coordinates and collaborates with the City’s information technology staff to resolve problems, adhere to best practices, and meet organizational objectives
- Maintains policies, procedures, and regulatory compliance through work practices and audits; determines the impact of existing system standards and procedures on planned installations of new systems
- Performs requirements analysis for development or enhancement of new and existing computer applications and programs
- Keeps abreast of the latest developments in computer systems technology
- Performs related work as required.

- Bachelor's degree in Information System, Computer Science, or a related discipline
- Experience working with technology in a public safety environment
- Experience leading, managing, and supervising a team of support engineers
- Experience implementing new business related software systems
- Knowledge of information security best practices aligned with system administration
