Crew Leader - Public Works

JOB SUMMARY:

This position is assigned to the Department of Public Works and is responsible for the operation of various types of equipment and vehicles utilized in the provision of city services related to streets, parks, facility maintenance, solid waste, and utilities. This position exercises functional supervision of personnel and work activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Proficient in the operation of several types of equipment, to include but not limited to, motor grader, backhoe, front end loaders, rollers, 20 cubic yd. garbage truck, dump truck, skid loader, and other equipment and tools used in construction and maintenance of streets, alleys, and drainage improvements.
• Supervises, schedules, and participates in daily activities of staff assigned to provide a wide range of departmental services.
• Advises supervisor of needed repairs to equipment or needed equipment; performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment.
• On occasion, will be required to perform maintenance and repairs on water and wastewater systems as directed.
• Attends and participates in monthly safety meetings.
• Schedules major repairs or work activities when directed, to include management of materials and resources, quality control, and personnel assigned.
• May on occasion drive an assigned collection route on which household garbage, trash, recyclable materials, and brush are collected, and transports solid waste to disposal site.
• Maintains assigned vehicle(s) in a clean, safe, and operable condition.
• May be required to do occasional trimming of trees vegetation control as well as traffic sign installation.
• Cleans streets and low water crossings when needed.
• Responds to after-hours calls whether scheduled or not.
• Assist other departments as directed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• May be required to fill in for the Public Works Superintendent in his/her absence.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, asphalt repairs, and proper trench backfill.
• Ability to follow grade (blue top) or work within acceptable grade for existing conditions.
• Training in one or more of the following related areas: Site work using standard construction practices, safe operation of equipment, as well as best management practices for storm water runoff.
• Minimum two years supervisory experience.
• High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred but not required.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

• Valid Texas Class C driver license; Texas Class B CDL required within six (6) months of employment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of safety practices and requirements of the job.
• Ability to work well with others.
• Practical use of a rod and level preferred but not mandatory.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 40 pounds on a regular basis
• Visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand/eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate tools and equipment associated with the job.
• Working conditions are in a field environment.
• Must be able to pass a drug and/or alcohol screen.
