This is technical and supervisory work in collecting, processing, and analyzing utility data and monitoring Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems.

An employee in this class is responsible for coordinating resources and ensuring accurate meter readings and efficient operations of the City's residential and commercial AMI systems.

Works under general supervision of management with considerable independent responsibility for determining work to be performed to meet operational deadlines.    Monitors AMI system performance and data integrity.   Investigates and resolves issues related to the AMI systems.  Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and network health analytics of the AMI system for trends and issues.  Coordinates and supervises the work of staff involved in monitoring, maintaining, and analyzing AMI systems and ensures excellent customer service is provided to customers.  Generates work orders to address issues related to network communication or irregular data received from the AMI network and connected devices.  Identifies necessary repair, calibration, and testing of meters.   Submits scheduled meter readings for processing through data transfers.  Creates, updates and maintains data using customer information systems and other associated meter reporting applications.  Prepares and submits reports regarding meter performance, data quality, and the health and operational efficiency of AMI systems.  Keeps current with emerging AMI technology and operations.  Researches system developments and makes recommendations with management.  Drives to work sites, trainings, and meetings.  Performs related work as required.Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of three years of paid experience in utilities collection, utilities billing, utilities reporting, or utilities customer services activities.  Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.

Considerable knowledge of relevant divisional rules and regulations.  Knowledge of the use and programming of AMI systems and equipment.  

Skill in the use of personal computers, tablets, and related software in all aspects of the work.  Skill in maintaining, monitoring, and analyzing AMI systems data.   Ability to analyze and evaluate problems, make decisions and direct corrective action.  Ability to effectively plan, assign, coordinate and supervise the work activities of subordinate workers and to train employees in all aspects of the work.  Ability to schedule work to meet strict deadlines.  Ability to create, update and maintain data using customer information systems.  Ability to perform mathematical calculations with fractions, decimals and percentages.  Ability to establish and maintain effective employee and public relations.  Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.  Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.  List of essential job functions available upon request. This is a classified position.  

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for education and experience.  A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience.  TEST WEIGHTS:  Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.  

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.


Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates.  The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 70% for qualifying, 20% for education, and 10% for experience.

RESIDENCY:  Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.  VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.


DRIVER S LICENSE:  An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment.  Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
