Temporary – Seasonal Laborer (Street)
Department: Public Works
Reports to: Foreman – Street
FLSA Status: Nonexempt
2026 Wage: $20.00 per hour
JOB SUMMARY
This position performs street maintenance work, light equipment operation and a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to maintenance of city streets.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for and able to operate and maintain light to medium equipment in the maintenance and repair of city streets, alleys, parking lots, sidewalks, curbs and other city properties.
Mobility to perform asphalt repair, patching, sealing, overlay, and other street and alley, maintenance and repair.
Able to safely operate all assigned and related equipment necessary in the day to day maintenance of city streets and properties, such as patching equipment, air compressors, air hammer, push mowers, and power mowers.
Able to operate various power and hand tools and equipment in performing heavy manual labor.
Perform manual labor in street, alley, curb and parking lot cleaning, picking up liter, routine gutter and curb cleaning and repair, loading and unloading materials, assist on patch crews, and serve as flagman.
Able to maintain, clean and repair all equipment and tools.
Able to operate moderately complex equipment and assist sanitation crews.
Performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of general construction and/or maintenance work.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor under a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to work under pressure and public criticism.
Knowledge of city and departmental safety policies and procedures.
Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations.
Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Supervisor - Street assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include traffic laws, work safety policies, and city policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
The purpose of this position is to perform street maintenance work, light equipment operation and a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to maintenance of city streets.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be at least 18 years old.
Must possess and maintain a valid South Dakota driver’s license.
RESIDENCY
All new hires must reside within 40 miles of city limits unless specific approval of City Manager.
