Starting pay ranges from $65,021 to $76,058 based on previous years of service.

The Aberdeen Police Department is seeking a dedicated and community-oriented School Resource Officer (SRO) to serve within the city’s public schools. This full-time position will focus on fostering a safe and positive learning environment through proactive engagement, mentorship, and collaboration with school staff, students, and families.

Applicants who already possess Maryland SRO certification are highly encouraged to apply. However, the department will provide full School Resource Officer training to qualified candidates who are already certified law enforcement officers.

Eligible candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Hold current Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions (MPCTC) certification as a police officer, or
  • Possess an out-of-state law enforcement certification that qualifies for comparative compliance through the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission.

The selected officer will represent the Aberdeen Police Department in the school community, emphasizing safety, trust, and educational support while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

Candidates must successfully complete the required training and probationary period and must pass a background investigation, polygraph examination, physical examination, and emotional and psychological fitness examination. As well as meeting the following requirements:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • A valid Maryland State driver's license
  • Responsible for protecting citizens and property. Patrols assigned areas, responds to calls, enforces laws, makes arrests, issues citations, and occasionally testifies in court cases.

    Police Officers may be required to work overtime as necessary with little or no notice; must be able to adapt to changes in working conditions such as schedules (nights, weekends, and holidays), changing shift configurations, and variables of weather; may be required to use deadly force; and must be able to safely perform the duties of the position without posing a threat to the health and safety of themselves or others. Candidates must be of good moral character and emotionally stable.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, preserves, and processes evidence; performs searches; detains suspicious vehicles and persons; arrests when probable cause exists; and searches, restrains, transports, guards, and processes people
  • Interacts with citizens while on patrol; establishes rapport and good relations to foster law enforcement objectives.
  • Enforces traffic laws and parking regulation; investigates accidents and, as required, renders first aid to victims.
  • Corrects hazardous situations as appropriate.
  • Conducts investigations by obtaining information by interviewing witnesses; gathering and preserving evidence; performing arrests as appropriate.
  • Identifies community problems and possible solutions by attending community meetings or by other appropriate means.
  • Ensures reports, warrant applications, and other legal documents are prepared accurately and on time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Testifies in court, as required.
  • Maintains a positive, professional attitude and appearance at all times when performing any official duty, to reflect positively on the Officer, the Department and the public in general.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of this state
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be certified by MPCTC as a Police Officer in good standing.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation, polygraph examination, physical examination, and emotional and psychological fitness examination
  • Valid Maryland state driver's license or ability to obtain Maryland state driver's license.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and problem solving skills, including the ability to maintain composure under stress
  • Strong organization skills, able to multi-task, and can manage time to meet frequently changing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
