What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Laborer position at City Government?
Performs various manual tasks associated with maintenance and/or construction of all city streets, parks, storm drainage, and water distribution and sewer collection lines. Maintenance of city street signs, facilities and equipment and a variety of miscellaneous maintenance tasks.
Essential Job Activities
- Maintain city streets – patch, oil and seal
- Prepares sub-grade for curbing – back-fills and reconstructs street surface
- Constructs city streets through operation of grader, loader, roller and dump truck
- Repairs water line breaks
- Repairs sewer line breaks and stoppages
- Replaces and installs new water lines
- Removes snow and ice from streets
- Helps, as directed by Board of Aldermen, to keep park in good condition
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools in completion of assigned tasks
- Operates all heavy construction equipment owned by the City
- Performs all duties in accordance with departmental safety procedures
- Maintains city street signs
- Reads customer water meters monthly
- Monitors lift station operations
- Monitors lagoon aerator operation daily
- Mows city right of ways and other city grounds such as lagoon
- Turns water meters on and off as needed for new service, discontinuation of service or for non-payment of bill
- Routinely flushes fire hydrants
- Routinely exercises water valves
- Replaces old meters as required and installs meters for new services
- Works some weekends and holidays on a rotating schedule
- Keeps public works buildings properly cleaned and maintained
