Position Description
The City College of San Francisco Astronomy Department has two full time faculty members and two adjunct faculty members. Faculty members have access to a high-speed computer network with the latest desktop computers in the office. We have a Spitz A3P Star Projector in our Planetarium. In addition, we have a portable digital planetarium for outreach activities.
The Department has a Meade LX-200 telescope, two Meade LX- 90 telescopes, and several smaller telescopes, as well as a CCD camera and CCD spectrometer. In addition, we have access to Lick Observatory telescopes and robotic telescopes from Skynet UNC for student research projects.
The Department is developing its own multi-purpose classroom. Currently, we have access to the College computer laboratory-classrooms and multimedia classrooms for instruction. The successful candidate will be expected to use some or all of these resources, as appropriate to the assigned classes.
The College is developing a campus-wide plan for multimedia and network technologies across the curriculum. Currently, all courses in the Department can be delivered as in-person, hybrid, and/or full online mode. However, we are much in need of a program to integrate image processing, networking, and multimedia.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in reviving public programs and enhance the learning opportunities and resources available to students.
Job Duties
Teach a mix of astronomy courses.
Teach day, evening, and/or Saturday classes, or classes at other sites, as required.
Hold office hours and be available to assist and advise students at times convenient to them.
Participate in Department student mentoring and/or service-learning activities.
Participate in Department community outreach activities.
Participate in revising and updating the astronomy curriculum.
Participate in developing of new astronomy courses.
Supports and engages in culturally responsive, inclusive, and anti-racist practices as they relate to student success, with an awareness of student equity gaps.
Participates in ongoing training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism to center pedagogy.
Perform other related duties, as assigned by the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
City College of San Francisco Minimum Requirements:
1. Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to work with community college students with disabilities, various sexual orientations, and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
2. Earned Master’s Degree in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics from an accredited institution; OR THE EQUIVALENT ; OR Earned Bachelor’s Degree in Physics or Astronomy from an accredited institution AND earned Master’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Meteorology, or Geophysics from an accredited institution; OR THE EQUIVALENT ;
Alternatively, Minimum Qualifications may be met with the following:
Earned Master’s Degree in the interdisciplinary area of Planetary Science or Astrobiology from an accredited institution; OR THE EQUIVALENT ; OR Earned Master’s Degree in Geology, Geochemistry, or Microbiology from an accredited institution AND upper division or graduate course work in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Planetary Science, or Astrobiology from an accredited institution; OR THE EQUIVALENT ; OR Hold a fully-satisfied LIFE California Community College Instructor Credential in Astronomy and Astral Physics (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1, 1990).

Desirable Qualifications
Master’s Degree or higher in Astronomy and/or Astrophysics from an accredited institution preferred. See Minimum Qualifications listed above.
Two or more years in teaching introductory astronomy at the post-secondary level.
Two or more years in teaching astronomy laboratory classes at the post secondary level.
Demonstrated familiarity with online education as well as multimedia design.
Demonstrated familiarity with astronomical image processing software, and/or astrophotography.
Experience in teaching astronomy in nonacademic settings, such as planetaria, public lectures, or school programs.
Experience in observatory operations and maintenance.
Demonstrated breadth of academic achievement in astronomy and/or astrophysics as indicated by academic transcripts and/or professional activities.
Evidence of instructional experience at the university or college level using culturally responsive pedagogy.
Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of inequities in higher education and a commitment to rectifying policies and processes that restrict access for historically minoritized and disproportionately impacted students.
