Primary Purpose of Job & Essential Duties/Responsibilities
The primary function of this position is to ensure the safe passage of pedestrians in the downtown area on days with significant cruise ship visitation by guiding and monitoring pedestrian movement.
Essential Duties:
- Detering jaywalking using verbal instruction, hand signs, or other traffic safety devices
- Directing pedestrians to the nearest designated crossing
- Making pedestrians aware of traffic safety rules and procedures
- Providing assistance to downtown visitors
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Ability to:
- Work directly with the public to provide instruction, information, and assistance
- Enforce rules in an assertive, professional, and respectful manner
- Be outside in inclement weather conditions
- Stand and walk for long periods of time
- Pass a flagger certification exam and test paid for by employer
Minimum Qualifications & Other Job Requirements/Expectations
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Must hold, or be able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hiring, Flagging Level 1 Certification through a State of Alaska DOT approved provider
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Working Conditions
- Works outside on sidewalks in the downtown area
- Generally works between 10AM and 4PM
- Will be exposed to inclement weather conditions
- Will be expected to work some weekends
Specific Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk on concrete and asphalt surfaces for prolonged periods of time
General Physical Requirements
- Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities which permits the employee to communicate effectively
- Sufficient vision and powers of observation which permits the employee to perform assigned tasks, follow traffic safety rules and protocols, and observe and act upon potential safety hazards
- Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes which permits the employee to function in pedestrian walkway and crossing environments
