WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
CCFR provides 24/7 emergency response for the City and Borough of Juneau. All permanent full-time positions work 24-hour shifts and live at the station during their shift. CCFR has two live-in stations, the Juneau station located in downtown Juneau, and the Glacier station located near the Juneau International Airport. In addition, we have Douglas, Auke Bay, and Lynn Canal Stations.


ADDITIONAL TESTING
Successful candidates must pass Phase 1 of the selection process by meeting the minimum qualifications outlined below, passing a preliminary interview, and passing a criminal background check. Once this is accomplished, they will move to Phase 2 of the selection process, where we will travel them to Juneau to participate in an Assessment Center, and where they must also pass a psychological evaluation, and pass a physical “fit for duty” medical exam.


Typical Responsibilities

The Battalion Chief is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing fire department operations within an assigned battalion. Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Operations, you will serve as the highest-ranking command officer on duty—leading emergency response efforts, supervising personnel, and ensuring operational excellence across all functions. This role requires a confident decision-maker who thrives in high-pressure environments and is committed to fostering a culture of professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Typical duties of a Battalion Chief include:


Operational Leadership & Emergency Response
•Command emergency incidents and coordinate response strategies
•Deploy personnel, apparatus, and resources effectively
•Ensure compliance with safety standards and operational protocols
•Support fire suppression, EMS, hazardous materials, and rescue operations
•Conduct inspections, fire investigations (non-criminal), and public education outreach
Team Leadership & Supervision
•Supervise company officers and assigned staff
•Oversee staffing, scheduling, and battalion coverage
•Integrate and support volunteer firefighters within operations
•Conduct performance evaluations and guide professional development
•Maintain discipline, accountability, and high performance standards
Training & Development
•Lead and support fire, rescue, and leadership training programs
•Ensure personnel maintain certifications and required competencies
•Conduct incident debriefings and continuous improvement initiatives

•Participate in hiring and promotional processes
Administration & Strategic Planning
•Contribute to departmental strategy, policy development, and budgeting
•Oversee compliance with OSHA and regulatory standards
•Manage reporting, documentation, and performance tracking
•Coordinate with partner agencies and support emergency planning efforts
•Ensure accurate incident reporting, asset management, and personnel documentation

Minimum Qualifications

Desired Qualifications


Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent.


Experience: Seven (7) years of career fire service experience.


Certifications: Certification as a State of Alaska Firefighter I or an equivalent certification as determined by the Fire Chief at the time of appointment. Certification as a State of Alaska Emergency Medical Technician I or higher or an EMT certification from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians at the time of appointment. 


Licenses: A valid Driver’s License at time of appointment (and for continued employment). 


Other: Not less than 18 years of age. 


For Continued Employment: Must become a Fire Service Instructor within twelve (12) months of hire. A Blue Card Certification is required within twelve (12) months of hire. Must become a Blue Card Trainer within twenty-four (24) months of hire. Completion of FEMA required ICS Certifications within eighteen (18) months of hire.
