The City and County of Honolulu (City), Department of the Corporation Counsel, Litigation Division is looking for a responsible, detail-oriented legal clerk who works well under pressure and is eager to contribute their legal support skills while working under pressure on some of the most high-profile legal defense cases handled by the City. This is a great opportunity for an organized and proactive professional to strengthen their legal clerical and administrative skills while contributing to the success of the City’s legal defense team.
What You Will Do:
- Prepare, proofread, edit, and finalize legal forms, pleadings, contracts, correspondence, reports, and related legal documents.
- Manage e-filing, maintain court calendars, track deadlines, and coordinate scheduling.
- Establish, organize, and maintain legal case files, records, and case status information.
- Assist attorneys with trial and hearing preparation by compiling records, gathering documents, and preparing case-related materials.
- Maintain witness lists, prepare and track subpoenas, and coordinate travel arrangements for witnesses as needed.
Career Progression:
There is room for career growth as you work to progressively advance in this job series from a Legal Clerk I up to a Legal Clerk IV position. Experienced and knowledgeable legal clerks can later apply to be a Supervising Legal Clerk II with satisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills. (Note: Absent additional qualifications, these classes of work will NOT normally progress to Attorney positions.)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Two years of clerical work experience, one of which must have been legal clerical work involving the preparation, typing and processing of a variety of legal forms and documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms and documents.
- Business school or college-level credits from a regionally-accredited college or university will substitute for experience on a month-for-month basis for the required general clerical experience.
- Relevant education and training from a regionally-accredited college or university in a legal office administration, legal assistance, legal secretary, paralegal, or law program may be used to substitute for the required clerical experience in a law office. The amount of time credited for the substitution will be dependent on the specific program you completed.
