Looking for a meaningful career where you can help provide safe, reliable drinking water to the community? The Honolulu Board of Water Supply (BWS) , is seeking Assistant Water Treatment Worker's ! This full-time, permanent role, located in Honolulu , involves assisting with the operation, maintenance, monitoring, and repair of water treatment systems, handling treatment chemicals, performing water quality testing, and supporting safe, reliable drinking water operations across multiple facilities.

What You Will Do

• Transport and handle water treatment chemicals by safely loading, unloading, delivering, and refilling chlorine cylinders, bulk chemicals, and other treatment materials at pump stations and facilities.
• Monitor water treatment systems by inspecting equipment, checking chlorine levels, and reporting the operating status of pumps, feeders, valves, filters, tanks, and related systems.
• Perform water quality testing by analyzing water samples for chlorine residual, pH, turbidity, and other required parameters, and adjust treatment processes under supervision to meet water quality standards.
• Maintain accurate records by documenting operating data, testing results, inventories, maintenance activities, deliveries, and other required information using computerized systems.
• Assist with equipment maintenance and repairs by inspecting, cleaning, calibrating, installing, replacing, and repairing chlorination and water treatment equipment under general supervision.
• Support facility operations by maintaining treatment facilities and vehicles, assisting with GAC system activities, and participating in required training to ensure safe and effective water treatment operations.
• Perform other related duties as needed.
  
  

Special Working Conditions

• Work schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
• Perform heavy lifting and handle chemicals such as chlorine, caustic soda, and muriatic acid.
• Operate and work on lifts, ladders, and scaffolds as required.
• Work in various locations, including underground basements, confined spaces such as manholes, vaults, and shafts, pump rooms, and remote locations with limited access or uneven terrain.
• Participate in the Hearing Conservation Program.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

WORK AUTHORIZATION REQUIREMENT

At the time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Graduation from high school or equivalent satisfactory to the State Board of Certification of Public Water System Operators.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Valid Driver's License (automobile/Type 3)

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT

Prior to Completion of Probation

Current, valid Department of Health Operator-in-Training Certification

Must Be Able To

• Understand basic water treatment operations and applicable laws, regulations, and codes.
• Understand basic valves, pumps, flow measurements, and motor principles.
• Follow safety procedures and recognize hazards related to the work.
• Learn to operate tools and equipment used in water treatment work.
• Read and record meters and gauges.
• Learn to perform minor repairs to chlorination systems.
• Communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and others.
