Position Information
The Department of the Corporation Counsel, Litigation Division, located in the heart of Downtown Honolulu, is looking for an experienced Paralegal Assistant II. Be part of a dedicated team that supports the City’s mission to serve public interest. You’ll work on diverse and meaningful cases, collaborate with skilled attorneys, and contribute directly to the success of the City’s legal efforts.
What You Will Do:
- Assist in all aspects of discovery - including drafting, reviewing, and organizing all discovery requests (interrogatories, requests for production, and requests for admissions), as well as preparing and filing responses and certificates of service.
- Prepare and finalize trial and arbitration related pleadings and exhibits, assist with witness preparation, and coordinate logistics for trial presentation materials.
- Conduct legal research, verify citations and quotations (including shepardizing), and assist in drafting dispositive motions, briefs, and other pleadings.
- Assist with cases filed in the Hawaii's District and Circuit Courts of the First Circuit, the Intermediate Court of Appeals, and the Hawaii Supreme Court, as well as the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
- Assist with procurement ,contracting and payment for experts, consultants, special deputies, and special counsel.
- Perform other related work assigned to the position.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
At the time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience involving the research, application, interpretation or explanation of laws, rules and regulations, two (2) of which shall have demonstrated a thorough working knowledge of legal procedures and terminology and the drafting, review and processing of legal papers and documents in a law office.
Substitution: Relevant education and training from a regionally-accredited college or university in a paralegal, legal assistant or law program may be used to substitute for some of the required general experience involving the research, application, interpretation or explanation of laws, rules and regulations. The amount of time credited for the substitution will be dependent on the specific program you completed. There is no substitution for the required work experience in a law office.

- Associate's degree in a Paralegal Studies or Legal Assistant program
- Bachelor's degree in Legal Studies
- Juris Doctorate in Law
