Join our team in a hands-on, skilled technical role operating heavy equipment to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of essential City-County infrastructure — including roads, streets, bridges, alleys, the sewer collection system, and the City-County landfill.

The work is performed under the general direction and supervision of the Division Superintendent, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative.  The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with supervisory personnel, other department and division employees, business owners, homeowners and the general public.
 
This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow and the Local Union No. 400, of the International Union of Operating Engineers.
  • Operates heavy construction equipment such as dozers, loaders, backhoes, motor patrol, rollers, paver, roto mill, and other vehicles and equipment to construct, maintain and repair City-County roads, streets, bridges and alleys, and sewage collection system, or to maintain the City-County landfill;
  • Paves and uses a variety of hand and mechanical tools to make surface repairs as instructed;
  • Performs a variety of tasks to chip seal surfaces, maintain culverts and roadway shoulders;
  • Excavates surfaces to repair or replace sewage collection lines;
  • Compacts garbage and covers landfill areas with dirt cover daily;
  • Performs manual labor such as loading and unloading materials, shoveling, sweeping and operating hand equipment to assist in assigned construction, maintenance and repair activities; Maintain water collection, storage, and treatment facilities;
  • Demolishes condemned buildings and structures as assigned;
  • Compacts, spreads, sweeps, hauls and places material on roads, streets, bridges and other rights-of-way;
  • Patches potholes and makes surface repairs on roadways;
  • Operates plows, graders, loaders, and other equipment in adverse weather conditions;
  • Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested and authorized;
  • Familiar with Topcon Automatics on Graders
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Performs all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner.  Specifically, complying with the Health & Safety Program; maintaining work areas in a safe and orderly manner; identifying and reporting unsafe conditions; reporting all accidents; wearing required personal protective equipment; and attending safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.
  • Performs all duties and work assignments in compliance with project quality requirements.
  • Acts responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the operation and care of heavy construction, maintenance and repair vehicles and equipment;
  • Good knowledge of traffic safety and laws in the operation of assigned equipment;
  • Good knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of roads, streets, bridges and other rights-of-way, sewage collection lines, and landfill sites as appropriate to assigned duties;
  •  Skill in the operation and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment;
  •  Ability to communicate well with supervisors, employees and the general public;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisory personnel, and the general public;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of heavy equipment operations and related tasks with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines, emergency conditions and in all forms of weather;
  • Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
 
Acceptable Experience and Training

  • Graduation from high school; and
  • Preferred MSHA certified Miner Training; and 
  • Considerable experience operating and maintaining heavy road and street construction and maintenance equipment; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
 
Required Special Qualifications

  • Possession of CDL licenses required for assigned duties, Or must be able to acquire one within 1 year or less;
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Montana.
  • Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance.  See below. "2.08.010 Residence during employmentFrom and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow. (Ord. 85 § 1, 1979)
