  • This is an on-call CASUAL LABOR position**

Provides safe and timely operation of the Citrus County Transit vehicles. Observes all state and local traffic laws and all safety rules and adheres to time schedules. This position is “safety sensitive” and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment.

  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
  • Uses a County-issued tablet to access assigned routes, trip manifests, schedules, and service updates; follows real-time routing and schedule adjustments as directed.
  • Loads and unloads, moves, and secures wheelchair; assists with infant, elderly, frail and disabled passengers while boarding and departing vehicles.
  • Completes required electronic documentation using a tablet, including passenger check-ins, trip data, mileage, service notes, and incident reporting.
  • Performs pre trip and post trip inspections. Checks and fills fluids, lights, mirrors, tires, wheelchair lift, radio, body damage, etc.
  • Cleans and inspects vehicle before and after each run.
  • Reports accidents, incidents, and service disruptions promptly and accurately using electronic reporting systems.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with customers face-to-face and through electronic communication tools while interacting positively with diverse internal and external contacts.
  • Performs work under stress, manages frequent interruptions, and adapts to changing routes, schedules, and service demands.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education, Training, and Experience

  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Experience driving passenger vehicles in a professional setting required, three (3) or more years of experience (commercial and/or non-commercial) preferred.

Skills And Abilities

  • Must be able to operate equipment in a safe manner and obey all safety policies.
  • Knowledge of defensive driving techniques, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies.
  • Ability to use a County-issued tablet or similar electronic device to access routes and schedules, communicate with dispatch, and complete required electronic documentation.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to enter data accurately, navigate software applications, and use electronic communication systems.
  • Knowledge of geographical area within Citrus County.
  • Ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to follow written instructions and perform calculations with accuracy.

License And Other Requirements

  • Valid Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL) "B" or "C" with Passenger Endorsement.
  • Clean driving record with no more than seven (7) points in the last three (3) years.
  • Successful completion of Level II Background screening is required. This screening is through The Florida Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse: https://info.flclearinghouse.com/
  • Must successfully pass a DOT drug screen and DOT physical.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment

  • Requires sitting most of the time.
  • The job involves lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, balancing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders, and occasional crawling.
  • The job requires simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, operating foot controls/levers, driving automotive equipment, operating a manual transmission, and occasionally typing.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
  • The job may risk exposure to adverse weather and moving machinery.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities

  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment, and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.

Must successfully pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical examination, and drug screen. Drug screens will be in accordance with the Drug Free Workplace Act and/or the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
