The Custodian performs semi-skilled janitorial duties cleaning and maintaining the inside, outside and grounds of Citrus County Animal Services in a team environment working together to ensure a positive experience for citizens and pets visiting Animal Services. 

The schedule for this full-time position is Tuesday through Saturday, 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM and is located in Inverness, Florida.

  • Performs routine floor maintenance including, but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, and spot-cleaning.
  • Cleans and dusts tables, chairs, counters, shelving, and other furniture. 
  • Collects and properly disposes of trash throughout the shelter. 
  • Cleans restrooms, breakroom areas, meeting/educational rooms, lobbies, and exam rooms, 
  • Restock bathrooms with necessary supplies. 
  • Cleans windows, windowsills, blinds, filing cabinets, air conditioning vents, mirrors, showers, and light fixture covers.
  • Makes semi-skilled repairs on buildings and notifies supervisors concerning major work.
  • Pet laundry duties.
  • Washing and disinfecting pet dishes. 
  • Assist with receiving, sorting, and putting away donations.
  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least 6 months experience performing general custodial duties.
  • Semi-skilled handyman experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) in a clear, confident manner using proper grammar.
  • Ability to work after normal business hours (including nights and/or weekends).
  • Ability to use personal protection equipment properly.
  • Knowledge of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Ability to use designated disinfectants with the correct ratio and contact time.
  • Ability to properly handle animal waste, animal dander, surgical waste, human waste, bodily fluids, etc.        
  • Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.

Certificates and Licenses
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and
    • IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System

Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Requires standing and walking throughout the entire day.
  • The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, balancing, twisting, reaching above shoulders, and occasional crawling and climbing.
  • The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, operating foot controls/levers, and driving automotive equipment.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and speaking.
  • The job may risk exposure to extreme noise, animal waste, animal dander, surgical waste, human waste, and bodily fluids.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.  Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.

Must successfully pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical examination, and drug screen. Drug screens will be in accordance with the Drug Free Workplace Act and/or the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.
