JOB SUMMARY
The Group Fitness Instructor leads safe and effective group fitness and athletic performance/sport classes for participants in a variety of specialties and environments.
Job Specific:
- Ensure that space and equipment are ready for each class and that classes start on time. (EF)
- Lead and instruct small or large groups of participants in water or land exercise/sport classes. (EF)
- Identify and correct incorrect or potentially hazardous movements in each class. (EF)
- Demonstrate as needed the proper movement or exercises to help participants learn. (EF)
- Maintain focus on class objectives and limit personal or inappropriate conversation. (EF)
- Recommend new class activities and opportunities to Group Fitness Supervisor/Fitness Manager.
- Complete any necessary sign in procedures for each class. (EF)
- Ensure room/exercise area is free of equipment and debris after classes are over. (EF)
- Encourage participants to attend classes, engage in HealthPlex services and offer suggestions.
- Find substitutes if and as early as possible when unable to teach a class due to illness or emergency. (EF)
- Limit substitutions to no more than 20% per month. (EF)
Hospital:
- Adheres to organization-wide and other applicable policies and procedures.
- Day-to-day performance complies with the hospital’s Service Excellence Behavioral Expectations.
- Performs within the prescribed limits of the hospital’s Ethics, Compliance and Confidentiality Program guidelines.
- Performs within professional Scope of Practice at all times.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Required: None
Preferred: High School Diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE
Required: Previous experience teaching group fitness and athletic performance/sport classes.
Preferred: 2 years’ experience teaching a variety of group fitness and athletic performance/sport classes.
SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Required: Able to give directions to groups of people in a noisy environment. Able to identify and correct improper or unsafe movements. Able to demonstrate the specific exercises or skills needed for the activity. Able to motivate and inspire participants.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Required: Adult CPR w/AED certification from a recognized entity (AHA, Red Cross, etc.) upon hire OR within 90 days of hire. Certification from a nationally recognized fitness organization such as ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NASM or similar that is acceptable to management. Experience and demonstration of skills to the Group Fitness Supervisor or Fitness Manager may be accepted in lieu of certification. Aquatics instructors must possess in house Water Safety training upon hire OR within 90 days of hire.
