What are the responsibilities and job description for the Manufacturing Engineer - Power Electronics & Flight Hardware position at CisLunar Industries?
Who We Are
CisLunar Industries transforms power to run space by developing power infrastructure hardware and software for the space economy, specializing in power processing units for electric propulsion and spacecraft power distribution.
Our work supports both government and commercial missions and focuses on developing reliable hardware and systems that can operate in the harsh environment of space.
Our power electronics and avionics teams build real flight hardware on aggressive timelines. We are a hands-on engineering organization where software and hardware are developed side-by-side to rapidly design, test, and deploy new capabilities.
Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to bridge early-stage R&D and flight hardware delivery for high-voltage power processing units (PPUs) supporting electric propulsion systems. This role is ideal for someone who understands the discipline, rigor, and quality expectations of low-volume, high-reliability aerospace systems—but is also flexible in their approach and wants to evolve those methods into a more agile, cost-conscious, and scalable manufacturing approach.
You will have an opportunity to build the systems and methods from the ground up for our new product lines. This will require owning the transition from lightly documented prototypes to repeatable, auditable flight builds, without slowing innovation.
You will work closely with design engineers, technicians, and test engineers to make designs buildable, testable, and scalable while maintaining schedule flexibility typical of a fast-moving aerospace startup.
This is a hands-on, high-judgment role suited for an engineer who has experienced both R&D experimentation and flight discipline and knows when to apply each.
Key Responsibilities:
Design for Manufacturability & Assembly (DFM/DFA)
- Collaborate with power electronics design engineers to ensure products are optimized for manufacturing by influencing layout, routing, accessibility and process flow in the design phase
- Identify assembly risks in high-voltage, high-power designs (creepage/clearance, fastener access, potting, harnessing)
- Recommend pragmatic design changes that reduce build time, rework, and test failures
- Balance traditional aerospace reliability requirements with practical, low cost, scalable solutions
Manufacturing Development & Process Definition
- Support engineering in defining and creating design documentation around tolerances, specifications, critical characteristics, datums, test strategy, inspection strategy, etc.
- Define manufacturing processes and create work instructions, process flows and build sequences for both prototype builds (engineering models) and production builds (flight models)
- Identify and/or design tooling, fixtures and equipment required for assembly processes to ensure high quality and efficient manufacturing
- Develop training protocols for technicians, lead training workshops and/or arrange for external training and certification
- Ensure there is a balance between documentation and definition vs speed-to-prototype/speed-to-manufacturing
Production Support, Inspection & Failure Resolution
- Implement production line design and set up all tooling, fixtures and equipment for low-mid volume production (10-100 units)
- Provide hands-on support during builds, working directly with technicians to resolve assembly issues in real time
- Perform in-process and end-of-line inspections and testing
- Lead root cause analysis for build and test failures to identify underlying issues across design, process and build
- Drive corrective actions back into design, manufacturing processes and documentation
Quality & Certification
- Establish documentation and traceability systems aligned with aerospace standards
- Lead AS9100 certification efforts across the company
- Contribute, lead and collate procedures and documentation to bring the company to audit readiness
Cross-Functional Coordination
Interface closely with:
- Power electronics engineers
- Mechanical engineers
- Firmware and test engineers
- Supply chain and quality (as those functions mature)
Bridge the gap between design intent and build reality, ensuring designs translate effectively into manufacturable products
Required Qualifications
- B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
- 5–10 years of experience supporting aerospace electronics hardware builds
- Hands-on experience with power electronics assemblies and high-voltage hardware
- Ability to read schematics, layouts, and mechanical drawings fluently
- Comfort operating in environments with incomplete information
- Background in quality systems, inspection methods and root cause analysis
- Experience creating manufacturing documentation
- Experience supporting builds on the production floor
- U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Person status required due to government contract regulations.
Strongly Preferred
- Experience supporting flight or space-rated hardware
- Experience transition from prototype to low/mid volume production
- Familiarity with ECSS / NASA / MIL build practices (at a practical level)
- Familiarity with conformal coating, potting, or HV insulation schemes
- Prior work in startups or small, fast-moving teams
- Background in both quality and manufacturing
Personal Traits We Value
- Ability to balance aerospace rigor with speed, cost, and scalability
- Comfortable pushing back on management, engineers, and technicians
- Hands-on, builder mindset who is willing to both define and execute
- Strong problem-solving skills and a desire to get to the root cause
What We Offer
- Opportunity to work on groundbreaking space technology
- Competitive salary and benefits package
- Professional development and growth opportunities
- Collaborative and innovative work environment
